That or not working out consistently...
I can't believe how many folks don't understand that it takes more than 2 or 3times a week to be "consistent".
You can do alot with 6000yards a week as long as you're doing the right things with those yards.
I would be the personified argument against your particular statement. To a point you're right, but only because the people that have to ask how to be fast don't know what the "right things" are.

Well right now I'm consistently in the pool 2 or 3 times per week, the way I see it its better than not at all, and I am happy with my mediocrity right now. :bolt:
Would I like to go 5 or 6 times? - you bet I would!
Do I want my husband to divorce me on grounds of waking him at 4.30 every morning? - no way!
You were right to ask her to take one of the empty lanes.
When I see someone eyeballing my lane and there are others with only one swimmer in them I try to encourage them to choose one of the other lanes by hogging the whole lane with a good strong Butterfly set. Scares them away every time.
When I do have to share or circle the regulars know that I will just swim down the middle when I need to pass them. Most of them don't pass eachother so that leaves the middle of the lane for me. Thankfully that does not happen often.
ARGH! Okay I am glad I found this rant thread. I need to vent.
I was doing a workout the other day and this girl asked if she could split lanes with me. No problem there, I was happy to share. Well, she doesn't get in for 10-15 minutes and by the time she is ready to get in 3 other lanes open up. I kindly ask her if she would mind taking one of those lanes since they were open and she looked at me and said, "No but you can move." I was in utter shock as the pool I swim in is not busy at all and is only used for lap swimming all day long. I kept thinking it was rude of me to ask her to use another lane but somehow I just can't think I was rude. She did finally go into one of those lanes and there were still 2 open lanes an hour later when I got out.
Rant out. I'm over it now! Phew.

You were there first and she expected you to move? What nerve.
I've refused to split ever since a lane-mate who insisted on splitting didn't bother to tell me that a third person had joined us. I had a head-on collision with the new person, who was under the impression that we were circling.
Butterfly is a good way to get rid of an obnoxious lane-mate. If you don't do butterfly, you could always do a really splashy kick set.
The morons who run our indoor city pool:
- have an annual deficit of nearly $400,000
- do very little to increase revenues
- do not put in more than two lanelines for lap swim ("the cost for the lifeguards to do this would add $x to our costs")
- do not put the flags back in after free swim
:bitching:
Now, they have decided to close the pool from 13-19 December for "budget reductions". They will shut the heater off, dropping the temp from 86 to probably 74 over the week. Then, they will push the heater to max and try to get the pool back up to temp in one day.
:bitching:
- They do not use pool covers, which would cut their heating bill by 40% or so.
:bitching:
- They have not considered lowering the year round temp by a degree or two, the savings from which would more than make up for not closing the pool for a week - WHEN THE KIDS ARE ALL OUT OF SCHOOL!
:bitching::bitching::bitching:
This weekend our local club hosted its annual December meet. 500 kids each day in an indoor, 6 lane 25y pool. Fortunately, it's split session, with 11-14 in the am, and 10/u and 15/o in the pm.
My 7 year old swam his first competitive 200y free ever the first night (Fri). Although he shows no fear, he was worried about losing count. So I told him I would use the lap counter for him. He went 3:30(!).
The next morning, within 30 secs of arriving on the deck, I got cornered by the meet director and was told that I had violated several USAS rules, the main two being "interfering with the swimmer" and "using a counter for a race of less than 16 lengths".
I absolutely lost it (I don't care for anal retentive meet directors, and his approach tee'd me off), and told him that that had to be the stupidest of many stupid USAS rules, and if they wanted to discourage young kids from swimming more than a 50, this was the way to do it.:bitching:

He'll get over it! Mine did. He used to wake up every time, now he just keeps on sleeping! I call him from the locker room around 0715 and wake him up!
