I had a teammate many years ago who kept drifting over the center black stripe while "circle swimming". Lots of collisions. Eventually she admitted that she just found it much more relaxing when she closed her eyes while swimming. Yes, her goggles worked fine... otherwise, she was a truly inspirational woman, raised a large family (7 kids?) of national caliber swimmers working fulltime many of those years. I do imagine that she needed her relaxation time.

I was just reading a thread on a triathlon board about the difference between swimmers and triathletes when it comes to swimming. One guy wrote that most triathletes can't swim because they think swimming 1500 meters in 22 minutes is fast. He wouldn't even consider anyone who swims 1500 meters in more than 22 minutes a triathlete not to mention a swimmer. According to this dude, he started swimming 2 years ago but already swims the 1500 meter distance in 17:55. Is it me or does that guy sound like he's full of it?
  • That's his SCM time in a 25 meter pool. His LCM time is around 18 minutes....is what he claims. Unlikely. That would put him top 10 to top 5 for most age groups, among some serious swimmers. Tell him to put up or shut up. No 2 year swimmer is doing that I don't think.

How much current was there when he did the 17:55 and which direction was he swimming relative to it? That's his SCM time in a 25 meter pool. His LCM time is around 18 minutes....is what he claims.
  • Whether he can accomplish what he claims or not, the guy sounds like a dirtbag Not dirtbag... just ignorant of the totality of the sport at least in what he said at that moment. I guarantee if he just tried to swim through a couple of masters practices, let alone any high school or college level practice, he'd change his mind pretty quickly. We might even convert him! :D
  • There was a similar thread some time ago: Is it possible to improve THAT fast? - U.S. Masters Swimming Discussion Forums This is what he was swimming in... not efficient, but it got the job done
  • There was a similar thread some time ago: Is it possible to improve THAT fast? - U.S. Masters Swimming Discussion Forums Yeh and Lui started that one too :) That's his SCM time in a 25 meter pool. His LCM time is around 18 minutes....is what he claims. Extremely unlikely for someone who has only been swimming for 2 years. If you can't verify a swim, I wouldn't worry about it.
  • He wouldn't even consider anyone who swims 1500 meters in more than 22 minutes a triathlete not to mention a swimmer. What about someone who swims 50LCM free or fly under 30 sec and would care less about 1500M, a non-swimmer? Is it me or does that guy sound like he's full of it?Whether he can accomplish what he claims or not, the guy sounds like a dirtbag
