notsofast: I completely sympathize with you! I went to the hospital twice this year once for chest pains and once for lung problems (I'm 22 years old! and a college swimmer haha!) and both times they turned out to be something fairly minor. I went to the hospital in November 2007 and January 2008 and I am still getting bills from the first stint from almost 7 months ago! And major bills too! My rant however is not about that...it's about the fact that after ending my college swimming career in February, I was put on a 3-4month rest period because I was at too low of a BMI % and the doctors thought that the chest pain I was getting was a result of the fat lining along my heart beginning to deteriorate in addition to the need to clean my lungs of chlorine exposure so that I could be weaned off all the inhalers I was using in order to survive swimming in my poorly ventilated college pool. So for 3.5 months I did nothing but walk, and even that was limited because I got so bogged down with final projects and case studies, moving out and graduating that I had no time. Now, I am trying to get back into the groove and back into a routine and having a very hard time. It just stinks being so out of shape and I lost so much muscle mass that its very discouraging. I was assuming that I would gain weight when I was on this rest period but I actually ended up losing about 17lbs, but I know that it was all in muscle weight...therefore, I know how long of a journey it will be back to where or near where I was....but you gotta start somewhere!

This happened to me during my swim today.... Why can't swim instructors control their classes? A large child kept jumping in and out of my lane and didn't stop until he jumped on me. Then the lifeguard decided to do something.... No wonder no one wanted to share my lane! You have to learn to embrace being the "Grumpy old man of swimming!" I have!

I usually swim and was getting a bit bored with it so I took up running while my kids have swim team practice at our neighborhood pool and all was going well until today.Just a few minutes into my run I saw a big black and brown blur charge towards me and next thing i know I'm screaming my head off while this massive Rottweiler is circling me.Someone driving by(it could have been a murderer-I did not care)told me to get in and then dropped me off a couple of houses away.My legs were still so shaky that I cut my run short. This would never have happened while swimming! I can deal with unruly kids, grumpy old ladies and the swimmer who has no spacial sense. But I never have to worry about some bloodthirsty hound going for my ankles while I swim!

YMCA pool. 12:15. PRIME summer swimming lesson time. See the bleeding from my ears and eyes? That was from self mutilation. God knows what is growing on my skin and in my ears from the band-aid and pee bacteria. I know, I know...pee is sterile. But it's still disgusting. Never after 9 a.m. again.

You have to learn to embrace being the "Grumpy old man of swimming!" I have! But only if the prettier female swimmers also learn to embrace the "Grumpy old men of swimming".............. That would go a long way towards effacing the grumpiness and putting a smile on our face(s).
