In college I roomed with a very talented high jumper. The sports "trainer" gave him steroids, a very common practice back then. My roomie told me stories of amazing feats of strength in the weight room. I don't believe the drugs made it into the pool then.

I almost believe this. I remember when I raced in the marathon races. Here is me taking the following, salt pills, vit E capsules, glucose powder and lots of caffeine. The others taking heart shaped pinkies (benzedrine), bluies (dexedrene), yellows a Johnson and Johnson copy of Dexidrene, greenies (dexamill), multicolored orange and white capsules (long acting dexedrine). Green and white capsules (dexamill -long acting dexidrene with a relaxant) they were fooled by this one they would go like hell then fall asleep after taking 3 x 15mg pills. As I mentioned in another post I saw a swimmer receive an injection of cocaine during a race, he said it was to stop him from getting sea sick.

I don't know if I believe it, but the chief Balco chemist said that he thinks steroids can be taken safely. True or untrue, eventually steroids will become "safe" and when that happens it will not longer be necessary to test for them. The rougue who takes triple the recommended dosage will not hold a drastic advantage over his competitor. This will take a long time to happen because it takes a long time for people to accept science. Personally I would love to be able to take something that would make me feel like I was in my 20's and when it becomes safe and legal I will be one of the first in line!

And the shrinking gonads are an added benefit as well.

The chief Balco chemist is like the guy brewing meth in his bathtub. He doesn't have an unbiased point of view. There is probably a way to come up with anabolic steroids that would not be harmful at physiologic doses, but at physiologic doses they would provide no performance enhancement except in people with deficiencies.Go above physiologic doses and you have to mess with the bodies feedback loops and the chances you can do that safely are negligible. It would also be very difficult to come up with an anabolic steroid that would not have a potential brain effect(roid rage.) The one person I know who takes steroids does it to make up deficiencies due to a medula-blastoma. Though it is worth the trade off, there are evident psychological/mood disorder effects. The drugs are manufactured by Glaxo, they are aware of the side effects and I have been told that they are working towards diminishing them (by a rep, not a scientist). How difficult that may or may not be, I would not know.

Just read this item. Nearly every sport has a druggie.... OTTAWA (CP) - Canadian wheelchair basketball player Shawn Watson of Winnipeg has been suspended for two years after testing positive for cocaine. ADVERTISEMENT Watson failed a doping test May 20 at the national championships in Winnipeg, the Canadian Centre for Ethics in Sport said Monday. Cocaine is on the World Anti-Doping Agency's list of prohibited substances. Watson waived his right to a hearing and was suspended from competing CCES. He is also permanently ineligible to receive federal sport funding.

How will it ever become safe to have unnatural levels of Human Growth Hormone in a body?

About all you can say anymore is that a person "passed" the test. You can not really say that the person is definitively "clean" anymore just because they passed the test. What do you mean "anymore"? You can't, and never could, prove a negative. That's basic logic. You could always just conjecture that he took some drug which boost performance but no one else knows about it and there's no test that can detect it: there's no way to refute that claim.
