Does anyone have suggestions or kowledge on recovering from smoking? I quit smoking a few weeks ago after 31/2 year of the junk! Is it possible to heal my lungs? If not, how far back to normal can I get? If my lungs can somewhat heal, how long will this take? Thx for any input

My father saw the writing on the wall he quit smoking and drinking on his 70th birthday, he left us at 93. He still took a drink at a party. He said he did not miss the smoking.

I quit smoking when I was 10 years old, my mother caught my brother and I quit. Here is a time schedule of the benifits of quitting. whyquit.com/.../A_Benefits_Time_Table.html

Stillhere: I really do not know how long will it take for your lungs to recover and if they really will recover 100% as I have never smoke in my life. My brother did smoke a lot for 10 year but one day he just decided to quit and he did, this was maybe also 10 years ago, now he says he feels great. No matter how long will your lungs take to recover, it will be better for them not having nicotine anymore than still having, and also it will be great for the non-smokers around you. Well done, keep on it!!!... :) :) Any doctor in the room to tell us about it?

I'm sure there are many factors involved with the re-generation of lungs, but my Grandad smoked from the time he was 25 until he turned 80. His doctor told him to quit and he did. When he died nine years later, the doctors said his lungs were that of a non-smoker and his death was not smoking related. On the other hand, I have known people who died of lung cancer that never had a cigarette their entire lives. I don't smoke and if I get lung cancer, than I will live with my fate. What I don't understand is the person with cancer that continues to smoke until they die.
  • My DD has a friend whose parents smoke heavily. When I take her somewhere, my car reeks. She smells so strongly of smoke, and it is sad. And she hates it and wishes they would not smoke. Parents, think of your kids if you smoke!

I am 14 days into being a non-smoker myself. I sympathesize with your plight and am finally ready to get rid of this disgusting habit. What helps me is remembering that I get nothing good out of smoking, it's not like you get a buzz like drinking a beer...it just makes me smell like crap and feel like crap. Good luck to you!

The state has no right to tell me I can't hurt myself. Education is the constitutional path to a healthy existance, not legislation. What kind of reasonable, logical discourse is required over the health impacts of smoking? Is there some group of people who still reasonably and logically believe there is anything to still argue about? What exactly is the militant anit smoking group? Is it those of us that want to eat dinner without having to drop our clothes off at the dry cleaners on the way home? Is it those of us that realize that smoking related health ailments drive up health insurance costs? This whole argument that the state can't tell you not to hurt yourself is the most outdated argument of all. The state could care less if you hurt yourself. It's the fact that if you smoke, drive or ride without basic safety equipment you adversely impact all of us, not just yourself. Play out the societal and financial impact of a father of two who dies because he didn't wear a seatbelt. I smoked for a while, it's a state requirement in NC. I never once tried to convince myself it wasn't completely nasty, impacted everyone and had nothing to do with individual liberties. And, let me assure you that while you think you are fast and can beat the nonsmokers, the day you give it up you will swim much better, I promise you that. Then again, thanks for supporting the NC economy.
