Help My Flutter Kick is Horrible!

I am slow, and when I mean slow, I mean slow. I can do a 26 sec 50 with fins, but without I come in just under 1:20! I think a big part of it is just taking the fins off and doing a lot of kick sets to learn to feel the water better with my feet. I have a good breaststroke kick so I don't think my problem is an overly weak pair of legs, although they could be in better shape. Also, myankles are fairly flexible as I can point my toes and make my feet bend backwards past an even position with my shins. However, I do think that I need to loosen up my ankles when I kick. I feel like I get more out of my kick for those brief moments when I allow my ankles to snap back and forth with my kick. I think I actually need to relax more to kick faster as weird as that sounds. I suppose the answer to my question is that I simply need to take of the fins and do kick set after kick set until I learn to feel the water better with my feet and become more efficient.

  • george, kicking doesn't work for you there aren't any elite athletes who train 800 a day that's about 1/3 of warm up for many of them most train 6,000 to 12,000 I bet there are a few sprinters who do 2,500 - 5,000 I too would be cautious if I had knee replacement. these suggestions are for normal healthy people folks if y'all have surgeries or injuries, consult your doctors work with doctors trainers and coaches ande This whole thread is supposed to be about - My Flutter Kick Is Horrible! SDK is another subject. The dolphin kick done properly has excellent propusion I have gone as fast underwater using SDK as I have gone on top of water. When I raced in the old days I just could not do a lot of swimming do I have to explain why again? My workouts were based on about 800 yards a day. I was also a sprinter. My two races were 100free and 100fly. When I started swimming distance swims I was 29 years old. I found in salt water if I kicked hard, my legs barely stayed in the water. I am a very good floater. I also found when I swam a 10 or 15 mile race in fresh and over kicked I could not walk for weeks. So I think to kick 1000 yards fluttering the legs up and down is not for me. I will continue down the path of not doing kick sets in my workouts. Ande you seem to have success by kicking your self. Everyone here seems to agree that if you do kick sets you will win and maybe that is the reason you win. My two steel and plastic knees go pop, pop, pop when I try to flutter kick so there is no way I will Kick hard. When I fly, and I used to fly I tried to forget the the legs and they just did me fine.
