Or maybe not quite that dramatic, but I'm sooo frustrated - here's why: My normal pool is closed for a two week matinence so I've been swimming at the local Y instead. Now I was out of town for the last half-week and couldn't swim. So I figure I'll go and get a swim in today and get back in the water. Aaaand......the Y is CLOSED! Not fair! I'm going to New York in for a week soon and there will be no swimming there, so at best I'll get in two more swims before I leave, and two after that before I move back into school. Aghagha. Dry land just isn't as fun as swimming. :(

in response to the first post, i laughed, because i SO understand. I think the maintenance people forget how obsessive swimmers are about thier pool time. I think they would only understand if they themselves were swimmers. Anyways, maybe its a great time to take a yoga class? and one more thing, you CAN swim in New York, if you are in new york city are check out www.metroswim.org - there's a few teams around NYC, red tide swims at baruch college and has morning and evening practices. you can also pay and drop in swim to baruch, or some of the Y's around town. The Y on 14 street (between 6 and 7 aves) is pretty nice - there are morning masters practice there as well - good luck with everything! and remember to bring your party hat to the pool reopening.

I find a lot of YMCAs close the week before a 3-day weekend. (Not every 3-day weekend. Just one per year.) There is some necessary annual preventative maintenance that they do, and it takes time. Doing it during an "8-day week" (or even 10, if you count the weekends at both ends) gives then time to do it without rushing. If you are a member of YMCA, you should be able to find and use the "next closest" YMCA. Most Ys honor memberships from other pools. Go to YMCA.COM and search from there. I'm lucky. The town I'm in has at least 4 YMCA pools (maybe 5 by now?) within the city limits. And when they close one, they make sure the others are geared up to handle the extra swimmers. This week the downtown Y is shut down, so there were quite a few extra swimmers in my pool this AM. (Likewise, at least one is open on just about any given holiday -- even Thanksgiving and New Years -- for at least a couple of hours, and they advertise this at the others so that die-hards know where they can get pool time, or gym time or weight room, etc. They rotate these special openings among the local Ys so that staff at any one facility aren't the ones who always have to bear the brunt of being open on all the holidays.)

I don't mind the rest periods....but I'm joining my University's team in the fall and every day I'm forced to take off due to extraneous circumstances makes me more nervous :(
  • I live in New York & swim with both Red Tide & at the evening Masters at the Y on 14th & 6th. If you PM me & tell me when you'll be around, I might be able to help. I wouldn't recommend swimming with the morning folks, as they are very crowded. It can be beyond frustrating.

I think it's around 65th St. It is old but they keep the water cold and have lots of lap swim times.

Thanks for the pool suggestions for New York. I don't know how much time I'll have to swim - I'm hanging out in Brooklyn with a few friends from school for a week. Anyone know of any places in the Brooklyn area? Might as well find some incase I get a chance....
