I drink a full quart of water during a 70-90 minute workout. (Just water.)
I'd soooo stay away from my pool water (not to say I haven't unintentionally swallowed some)...just that I don't think it's only water and chlorine.... But I won't go there.....
Can't imagine doing a hard workout w/out a bottle of water nearby. But I sometimes can get away w/out one if I'm just doing something easy.

Urine is sterile.
But other substances that come off the body, or from within the body -- well, you're right. Don't go there. Of course, that's why they chlorinate the pool (and monitor bacteria counts, pH and other measurables.)
Hey, I hope you didn't interpret my post to say that I drink a full quart of POOL water. Of course, I bring my own! It's how I know I drink a full quart.
BTW, I'll bet that the guy who chided InnerFish about drinking water didn't take a shower before entering the pool... I wonder what his reaction would have been had I'Fish responded to him, "I drink my own water because you don't shower before getting into the pool..."

Well, I assumed you brought your own. Chlorine, despite the many wonderful recipes for it, just never does much for a drink. And you seem like a pretty sensibel guy! :)
I'm actually pretty careful what I say to other swimmers at the pool... who knows...they may just have been to Karate or kickboxing class before swimming. ;)
What? No option for vodka tonics? ;)
Seriously, just water for me.... I usu. keep a water bottle at the end of my lane. Once a man commented...you're drinking water in a swimming pool? What can I say? I like my water straight up.
I just usually drink water with about half a lemon in it. It helps to cut the chlorine that otherwise seems to coat my teeth with fur. ;)

I'm interested that the majority of respondants seem to prefer plain water to sports drinks. Is there a reason for this? Or is it just an economic issue?

I'd like to see you execute a flip turn after a couple of vodka tonics...haha
