Because when you swim you can't do this:

Ow. Ow. Ow. Fortunately, she escaped with no horrible injury...I've included the story below:
MONTREAL (AFP) - US diver Chelsea Davis smacked her forehead into the 3m springboard during the preliminary competition at the World Swimming Championships but escaped serious injury.
"Chelsea has no fracture, maybe just a little chip fracture but basically her nose was not broken," said US diving team leader Bob Rydze.
"The plastic surgeon is putting two or three stitches up on the bridge of her nose. That's the only place she was cut.
"She knew she hit the board, and she knew what dive she hit the board on, which was a very good sign. A lot of times divers hit the board and forget on what dive they hit the board."

Wow...
When I was diving in high school, we had a few incidents where people would hit a body part on the board (usually they slapped it with their hands or something.) One day, though I was on the board, and the coach heard a loud *smack*as my head went past the board. She was pretty freaked, thinking that I had hit my head. Luckily, It was just my ponytail (I had really long thick hair at the time.)
I miss diving, but I have to say I don't miss the bruises that I was constantly covered in. There were times I looked like someone had taken a baseball bat to me.
I remember a high school meet, where our three divers were way behind the guy from the other team. We silently used our voodoo dolls, and lo-and-behold, on his last dive the guy landed FLAT on the water. He was stunned, taken to the hospital as a precaution, but was okay.
Stange feeling, to be happy that our divers placed ahead of this guy, but bad that we were joking about him wiping out, just before he did.

Part of me wants to laugh at that picture posted, the other part of me is screaming in pain at just the thought. I had a fear of getting off the diving board ten years ago, but I've overcome my fears, still, that doesn't mean I'll become a professional diver, and much less now after seeing that.
She's lucky she didn't end up paralyzed, which is all I can say.
In high school I smacked my head on the diving board & it was kinda scary since it was the back of my head-kinda freaked out my coach.
I am surprised this was posted though although it did make SportCenter.
The girl was on the Today show this morning and they replayed it at least 3 times. She was all busted up in the face, not very attractive.

Once I was showing how I could do a back flip off of the blocks. I hit my knee on the block. I've had several "incidents" with that knee. In a few years, when I'm brave, I have to have the knee replaced.
When I was getting my WSI in college, I almost didn't finish the course because we had to go off of the diving board. I'm always sure that I'm going to break my back everytime I dive off of a board. Blocks, the only place I've been hurt, don't bother me. Go figure that!
