ADT therapy for prostate cancer

I’m a 69 year old masters swimmer. Very shortly I will be starting hormone therapy for prostate cancer. It will take my testosterone levels down to almost nothing. This treatment has a myriad of side effects. Tiredness and muscle mass loss are the two that pertain to swimming. Just reaching out to others who may have already gone through this. Wondering if you were still able to compete in meets or any other advice you might have. Looks like I’m gonna be on this for six months.

  • My husband is an 81 year old Masters swimmer and is currently on ADT for prostate cancer. He will be on this for 2 years (4 doses 6 months apart). He has already had his first two doses. Hot flashes are what has been most prominent for him, but also fatigue. He has some other health issues which makes it difficult to attribute everything to ADT. He also has finished 28 radiation treatments. Yes, he is slower, but he is able to to swim and compete. We went to Spring Nationals in San Antonio and will be going to Summer Nationals in Federal Way. We are keeping up on our walking and weight training as well.

  • I don't know why you opted fit hormone therapy.  I didn't like hearing all the myriad of side effects so I opted for radiation.

    • Thanks for the info. I’m also going to try to swim and compete while under treatment. My medical oncologist believes the fact that I am a swimmer and will keep swimming in In addition to my weight training will help ease the symptoms. Best of luck to you and your husband
  • I had my prostate removed a year ago. I had a chemical relaps where my psa started rising again. I have a genetic test that indicated I had a high risk of metastasis. In addition to the hormone therapy I’m having 38 radiation treatments. Praying that will do the trick.
