I know going into every workout that the first 1800 yards are going to be torture for me. My lungs feel like they're going to explode, my joints feel stiff and concrete and the water seems as thick as honey.
But I also know that once I reach 1800-2000 yards I'll find my ryhthm and everything will fall into place.
Where is that at which you feel at one in the water?
it sometimes happens for me,
I'll find my rhythm or get in a groove.
usually when swimming longer stuff, or
doing hard training sets on not much rest
I wish it happened more often.

i believe most swimmers are more likely to break wind in practice than catch a second wind. any one agree?

I recall reading somewhere that it takes approximately 30-40 minutes before your lungs are able to fully absorb all of the oxygen in the air we breath durring strenuos activity. I've always believed this was the reason I catch my "second wind".
Perhaps it's just psychological for me though.
Either way, as I approach 2k yards it comes like clock work. After that my lungs feel great, although my tricepts and shoulders will eventually become fatigued and my form will suffer.

I actually feel grumpy during the warm up and for a little while after, then something happens, don't know what is happenning. Maybe I'm catching my second wind. My guess is that the endorphins have been released by that time and it puts a smile on my face and a buzz in my head.:D

Love that second wind. When you get there, you know you will have that endorphin high for hours after your workout!:D :D :D
Mine comes at about 2000 yards when I'm in shape. Or like now when I slipped a bit it is coming around 1000 (but climbing every day!)

It's not the endorphins, it's the lack of oxygen. Pick your head up, you're drowning!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :D
Actually, I know exactly what you mean. The first 1k yards I'm definately not happy about being in the pool. But I know it'll all get better in another 800-1k.
Wow, I never knew it was normal to get that! ha ha!
I get mine at about 1500 yds...
I always wondered why I felt better swimming after half the workout was done, than in the first part of the workout..
Strange. Why does this happen?
ps.. I LOOOOOOOVE the feeling afterwards! It's like crack sometimes! lol

LOL! Yeah - it does feel like crack! I start getting that feeling at about the 2,000 yard mark. Before then I feel yucky - very un-crack like.
I was so happy at the LCM meet in Oct. - I swam the 1500 and didn't feel like vomiting until at least the 1200 mark and I swam my best time ever!
