What are the fundamental tools that successful teams use to evaluate their season?
I am a lane coach for a large masters team (roughly 100 members). This past season, our team leadership spent a lot of time revamping the organization, and now that our SCY season is over, we are looking for tools to evaluate our team's effectiveness. Does anybody have ideas, strategies, tools, or resources they can suggest? In general, we're interested in evaluating our coaching methods and team management so that our team can continue to grow and thrive.
I think it boils down to what each swimmer hopes to receive from the program.
Ask them
Give them a questionaire
Interview them
Why do you train here?
What do you hope to accomplish?
How pleased are you with the program?
keep a file on each swimmer
Each person I train with has layers of reasons
why they choose the team and a particular training time
out of the many choices in austin
get in shape
not get fat
prepare for competition
stay healthy
feel good
prepare for competition
prepare for triathlons
improve their technique
hang out with their friends
i'd say only 10 - 20% of our team enters masters meets
one fellow I trained with just wants to get in and swim
he didn't want stroke instruction
as far as the team goes
you could measure
# of people at a practice
# of swimmers per lane
coaches per swimmer
their general attitudes
you could test swimmer abilities several times a season
get times in the
50 fr
100 free
100 stroke
200 stroke
500 free
1500 free
10 x 100's on an interval
you could measure coach performance
like
swimming knowledge
likability
communication skills
% of swimmers in their training session that stay
how appropriate work outs are for where they are in the season
if they pay attention to their swimmers
instruct and encourage
you could interview people who leave the team and
find out their reasons for leaving
hope this helps,
Ande

Another way to judge is to look at how successful your team was at state. You have to remember though that here in Illinois only about 1/3 of our membership participated.
Also, how many of your team members showed up for practice on a regular basis? How many stayed with the team throughout the season? Did a substantial number of people leave the team during the season? did many swimmers participate in meets throughtout the area or participate in postal swims?
Another way to look at your success is to determine if any groups formed.
