After my four month lay off and three weeks of fooling around in the pool, I have started my 1000 meters a day, sometimes twice a day. Can I at 72 years of age get my 50 free under 30, my 100 free under 1:07 and my 50 fly under 32 ??? I think I can. Todays workout. 300 m warmup varied strokes no complete breaststroke, arms only. No devices such as paddles, floats, fins, or kick boards. 500 m swimming, today all crawl 4 x 25 in 16 sec. on 30 3 x 50 in 44 sec. on 1:30 2 x 75 in ? no longer watching the clock on 2 min. 1 x100 holding form. Am I ever out of shape. 200 m very sloppy swim. George www.swimdownhill.com

Hey George, I was looking around your website weeks ago, even before I found this place. I didn't look into your bio, but will as soon as it is back on (your wesite). I am 54. I want to close in on 30s for the 50 meters freestyle. I haven't yet a number for the 50 fly. My first timed race (free) in Sept. 2004 was 34.58, without the flip turn. Last March I got a 33.07 with a flip turn. My all time heavy weight was 102 kilos a couple of months ago, now I am at 97, want to get down to 80, had a 18 year old weight of 72. (224, 213, 176, 158 lbs). Its incredible how you lose endurance and resilience, but there is always a little speed left. I was a B team swimmer, and even at that, not that good. The only "time" I remember was a 29s for 50 yards (short pool). I use to swim 100 yards fly and 200 I.M. Only during Winter in high school, in Chattanooga, Tennessee. Next semester as I get into better shape I might move on to swimming fly and I.M. (because, just like way back in high school, there aren't that many guys wanting to swim those styles). I want to finish saying that I feel great being back in the water, my wife is also swimming, she is practically a beginner, but is enjoying greatly her new found sport. Take care, billy fanstone.

    You can do it George!!!!!
  • Every year we remain above the ground/water is a goal for us oldsters. I'm only 64 but have to work hard to stay even each year. Having fun is sometimes more important than getting faster "don't float - thru life - make waves "
  • George, it's trying that is fun. Let the time be the time.

This is from way back. Was 72 when I started this post, now I am 77. I have been so busy I think I will have to get back in the groove with 1000 meters a day.

No it will start out some thing like this but a lot slower. I was delayed a couple of days starting there was a fire in our complex where we live and we had to leave our place for a couple of days.

Are you talking about 1000 meters without stop?
  • What does "in 16 sec. on 30 " mean? I'm guessing he did them in 16 sec on a 30 sec interval. Good job George!

Geo: I have wondered: In your picture it looks like your arms are disproportionately long (IE arms longer than the average for your height). Is this accurate?
