The FINA Bureau approved the dates, the schedule of events and the qualifying times for the XI FINA Masters Championships that will be held at the Avery Aquatic Center, Stanford University, Stanford California - August 4 - 17, 2006
Qualifying Times
The qualifying times are now posted. These times are easier than the USMS Long course times, however, remember if you do not swim at or faster than the qualify time you will receive "no time" for your effort - your swim will not count.
Schedule of Events
The schedule of events is up. The swimming portion will take place August 4th through 10th; and will include a day of relays. The open water swim will be on August 11th. There are also schedules for the other aquatic disciplines.
Hotel Rooms
The organizing committee has been working with a destination management company to get hotels at a good rate for swimmers. Those rates are only available if you book through the Internet portal that has been set up that has been set up or if you call the toll free number. Once to the home page of the hotel registration select your stay dates and number of guests in the room first then you will get a list of available hotels.(Also the Internet portal works best with IE 5.01 and IE 6.0+) .

Vacation destination
San Francisco and northern California is one of the premeire tourist destinations in the world. Besides the great swimming venue, there will be many day trips scheduled for you or your significant other (or children). This will be a great time to plan a vacation to the golden state.
The Organizing Committee is working on days trips and discounted airfares. Announcements will be made as the plans are made final.

What is the age cut-off date? Is it the day of the meet, or age as of December 31 2006. Makes a difference to me because I turn 45 in August after the meet.
The FINA Masters Committee decides what they would like the overall qualifying times to look like. A person who works for that committee puts together a proposed schedule. The qual times are voted on by the FINA Masters Committee, then they are presented to the FINA Bureau. The FINA Bureau then discusses and votes on the times - it is the FINA Bureau that has the ultimate say-so in the qualifying time.
If you look at the times in relationship to the qualifying times for Riccione, you will see that the 50's and 100's have a slower qual time - Allowing more swimmers to make them and compete. The 200's are the same qual times at the Riccione times and the 400's and 800's have faster qualifying times.

You might want to fix this link, Michael. There's an "http:" in there that will cause it to fail.
No 1500 free at Worlds, eh? But, regardless, thanks for the info. I'm definitely in for this meet!
No kidding, Michael, the qualifying times are w-a-a-y slow; what is the rationale for them being that slow- just greater attendance? And I am all for inclusiveness etc., it just seems counter-intuitive- am I missing something?
First they make the times slow enough that gull and I can qualify, what's next, cold coffee served at the meet and elimination of superteams so that all of us can get a shiny medal? What has FINA come to?
Kirk:
Thanks for the picking up the error. It has been corrected..

You have to be a member of a national federation that belongs to FINA. In the United States you would normally belong to United States Masters Swimming. In Great Britain you would belong the the British Swimming Association.
You can swim unattached from any club, but you must be a member of the Federation.
