I wonder:
who will win?
how Lochte is going to swim? will he go even faster?
how the University of Texas will do?
any one got any comments?
enjoy,
ande
i'd love for ut to win but i'll be surprised if they do
Last year they lost
aaron piersol, brendan hansen, and ian crocker
who racked up a lot of points in individual events and relays
I'm sure some obsessed person has calculated the points going in. the meet begins at 1:00 pm eastern time, 11 minutes to go
hope the gophers make prompt web updates

I think the 500 Free and 200 IM will be a WAR. Everyone in the top 8 is within range to win. My picks tonight are Peter Vanderkaay in the 500 and Ryan Lochet in the 200 IM. However Justin Mortimer and Eric Shanteau could be suprises. Will Tom Dolan's record of 4:08 .75 from 1995 be challenged? If not will someone go under 4:10.00?
I wonder if 1:16.00 will be broken tonight for the relay (4 x19) or 19 seconds for the 50 Free? Will Tom Jager/Anthony Ervin's time of 19.05 be finally broken? Will another Cal swimmer get a sprint record and keep the tradition going. (Biondi, Ervin, ?). I think either Cal or Auburn will break 1:16.00. Great splits from Fred Bousquet (18.66) and Duje Draganja (18.82). I thought that Michael Cavic would be on the relay but that Evan Lane did a 19.26 so they don't lose that much. I look for either of those teams to win but they will only be eligible to get a US Open Record. I slightly favor Cal.
I don't think Texas can win the NCAA and it would be a miracle if they did. From the 2004 NCAA Championship, they lost 239.5 points and had only 134.5 points returning. In contrast to Auburn, they had 230.5 points lost but have 403.5 points returning. Big difference.
Thanks Bob. When I started by post there was nothing up on the 50 Free. I didn't think I was that slow or there just swimming FAST. Fred just absolutely smoked everyone in that 50 Free. 18.74 vs 19.30 is pretty will attest to that. Can he do it again tonight and will others go with him under 19 seconds. Kind of reminds me when Joe Bottom broke 20 seconds and Gary Schatz when with him as well.
Bob:
One of the things I heard about Tom Dolan was that at the 1995 NCAA meet his astma did not effect him at all. The meet was in Indy and University of Michigan won the NCAA Championship and that was there first since 1961. Tom Dolan had probably the best meet of his career and still has 2 American Records from that meet still on the books. He never had problems during the whole meet and set records in the 500 Free, 1650 Free, and 400 IM.
I also heard that one of the reasons he would "hit the water with his fist after a good swim and winning" was that is asthma would act up during the races and he could hardly breath. This happened after then first day in Atlanta and he was pretty much finished doing well after the 400 IM. By the time he would face Perkins in the 400 Free he was pretty much out of it. In fact I don't think he made consols in the 400 Free in the 1996 Olympics.
KABOOM
history has been made today
the first man under 19 in the 50
How impressive is that?
What an incredible second 25?

BTW, I say Texas finishes no better than third.
That 18.74 50 free made my jaw drop. I knew it was only a matter of time before someone went under 19.00, but he blew the doors off that!! Of course, it's only the US Open record since Bousquet is from France.
Figured you'd see that swim sooner or later.
The 500 free will be a great race but I don't think anyone can touch that 4:08 in this meet. Breaking 4:10 would be incredible enough. Wonder why Dolan never put it together to beat Perkins in the 400? Also agree that Vanderkaay is the logical pick but will be rooting for our local guy Justin Mortimer (Milton MA and MA Bay Marlins) also Tobias Work (Cape Cod Swim Club). Had the pleasure seeing Tobias seem a 1650 at last year's NE open AFTER he jumped the start. Thought that would never happend again until Erik Vendt (BC High and Ocean State Squids) did the same thing a few weeks later at Nationals. Are we New Englanders a little too eager to start our 15 minutes of pain?
