I hope like crazy Texas wins it all again, but Auburn is just sooo deep. Putting on my orange tinted glasses, I think the Horns pull through and bring home another title. Hook'em Blue
  • prelims have started wonder what's in store today ande
  • Hi Ande: The performance last night had to be Peter Vanderkaay in the 500 Free going 4:09.82 and winning by 4.53 seconds. That is the second fastest swim all time. Ryan Lochet brought is time down to reduce his record and will provide an interesting race next week against Phelps. Fred Bousquet still remains the only man under 19 but at least got a challenge from Duje Draganja at :19.01 which would have broke the old record. Duje seems to come up short by .02 and 01 when I see him swim. The relay was different for Duje and Cal as they did break 1:16.00 which Auburn hit exactly. Having Milorad Cavic on the relay made the difference. His relay split was the same as Bousquet at 18.64. Tonights races will be interesting. The 200 Medley Relay is up for grabs with 1.5 seconds between 1st thru 8th. My two to watch are Stanford and Cal with Cal having the slight edge. The 400 IM shoud be a WAR with 4 experienced guys in the picture with Margalis, Shanteau, Mortimer, and Mellouli. I will go with Margalis. The last time someone broke the 50 free 20 second barrier was Joe Bottom and he won the 100 Fly that year. I am going to pick Fred to do it this year from his lucky lane 8. That is the lane he swam in last year when he won the 50 Free and broke the World Record. He is capable because he did have the fastest split in the 50 fly from the Medley Relay prelims. Since he got 6th last year this would be an upset. Simon Burnett is my pick to win the 200 Free and I wonder if he will match his time from earlier in the year and possibly break the new, less than a month record by Michael Phelps. Matt Biondi's record is the oldest NCAA record in history and he has held that for 20 years. I pick Ryan Lochet to win the 100 Back in a close race with Matt Grevers. I think he has a shot at Neil Walkers record. Gary Marshall is my pick for the 100 ***.
  • This morning I thought that Stanford might have a slight chance to catch Auburn. The were behind by 52 after Day 1 and cut that to 38. They did not swim as well as Auburn today and had a hugh loss with Andy Gant getting a DQ in the 200 Back after taking 3rd in the 200 Free. They are going to have to win the 100 Free and 200 *** and hope Auburn gets a DQ someplace. Not likely to happen. Auburn will win 3 straight but will do it by 50 to 70 points. In the 200 Back tonight I believe Ryan Lochet will win it but won't break his record from the SEC championships. I believe "Saving Swimmer Ryan" is actually not fully tapered and is actually saving himself next week for the WC trials. He will make up for the 100 Back loss. Tonights 100 Free is the event of champions. You have the 50 Free, 200 Free, 100 Fly, and 100 Back champions from this meet and that is half the field. You also have 6 foreign swimmers out 8 in the finals. Duje Drangja will be the favorate but I will think Rolandas Gimbutis will break thru for a win. Actually any one of the 8 has a chance tonight. Gary Marshall is going to need a win for Stanford to have any hope but I think lightening can strike twice for Northwestern in 47 years and I will pick Mike Alexandrov to win in a very close race with Polyakov from Alabama. Can a University of Kentucky swimmer win an NCAA title? I don't know if they ever have but Daniel Cruz has a legit shot tonight. He tied Davis Tarwater from Michigan today and one of those guys will win tonight. I make Cal a slight favorate tonight in the 400 Free Relay because they will probably substitute Duje for someone and they have been hot in relays. I pick Peter Vanderkaay to win the 1650 Free in a close race with Lars Jensen.

Absolutely. Less than 0.3 seconds separate 1-8. Less than one second between 1-16!! It's really anyone's race. I bet Bousquet will be under 20 seconds. Can he bring it home, though?
  • we're in for a night of excitement Wonder if we're going to see a new record in the 100 free? It's possible on paper add a second to 18.74 and you get 19.74, then add 1.5 to that you get 21.24 19.74 + 21.24 = 40.98 Works on paper, lets see how reality plays out tonight. I'm curious how he trained to swim that fast.

  • That is so fast, when Anthony Erving went 41.62 I thought that record would last a decade. Now I'm starting to wonder when we will see someone under 41! I can't wait to see it on tv.

On CNN, they showed the 50 on a really brief "what's happening this weekend." I looked like the tape was being played in fast motion! It was increible. On top of htat, the stroke looked smooth.
