Amazing swimming!

Not sure if anyone is watching, but Florida's Ryan Lochte (Olympic Gold/Silver medalist) has been incredible: First night; - 50 back medley relay leadoff = 20.92 - lead off the 800 free relay = 1:33.07 Last night; - 200 IM = 1:41.76 - 100 back lead off 400 medley relay = 45.19 This morning "floats" a prelim swim in the 400 IM = 3:46.95, finals start in just a little bit so we'll see if he gets Dolans AR of 3:38.18? Looking forward to seeing him and Phelps go at it next time!

Amazing is an understatement. That backstroke time would have placed him in the A Finals for the 50 freestyle. For that matter, the 100 back would have done the same for the 100 free. The televised NCAA's is going to be the ultimate sporting event to watch. ...provided you like swimming. :) By the way, does anyone know when they'll be shown ? (I'm assuming ESPN or NBC might cover portions of it.)
  • He just missed the 400 IM record. He has to save something for NCAAs, after all!

Ryan is a local here, and we are all proud of him. I am fortunate to have his sister, Kristin, as a coach for our early morning masters workouts. She has a lot of enthusiasm and has developed a real following.

I got to see Ryan Lochte here in Dallas about a month ago at the Dallas Morning New Swimming Classic at SMU. He definitely stood out with all his first place finishes. Here are some links to the results: Day 1 result, Day 2 results

If only they would tone down the rodeo stuff.
  • Hey, thanks for following the SEC championships, Paul! Lochte was phenomenal! If I'm not mistaken, he won all his events, individual and relay. He could've also won the 200 free and 100 back if he'd entered them, since he's the SEC record-holder. Here in Kentucky, we were really excited about Daniel Cruz winning the 200 fly. That's UK's first men's individual championship since 1957! Can't wait for NCAAs!

Fred, I'm sure that the rodeo enthusiasts and bass fisherman think pretty much the same about swimming. Unless the swimmers had bass and trout in the pool, and then tried to ride on the backs of killer whales at the "half time". Boy howdy. and yee haa. I guess swimming only gets it's due respect every couple of summers.:) Thanks for the tip.
  • Women's 2005 NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships - Friday, March 25, 2005 at 2:00 to 3:30 PM on ESPN 2. Men's 2005 NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships - Friday, April 1, 2005 at 1:30 to 3:00 PM on ESPN 2. Saw the SEC results online and I am very impressed with Ryan Lochte. Interesting article in Swim Technique called "Saving Private Ryan" on how he has impoved in the last few years. I don't remember anyone in a Conference Meet breaking American, US Open, and NCAA records in 2 events (200 IM, 200 Back). His breaking Piersol's record by almost a second was a big suprise. It will be interesting to see what events he swims at the NCAA meet. He is was only .04 from Matt Biondi's 200 Free American Record from 1987. Since the British swimmer Simon Burnett went 1:32.22 for Arizona eariler this year for a US Open Record it sets up some interesting possibilities. His 100 Back time is only .27 from Neil Walker's NCAA and American Record. He is within a second of Tom Dolan's 400 IM record. I noticed a lot of old pool and conference records broken by swimmers that swam over 23 years ago. Names like Mary T. Meager, Tracy Caukins, Tiffany Cohen, Jill Sterkel, Craig Beardsley, and Rowdy Gaines. All great swimmers all great records. Mary T still has the pool record in the 200 Fly swimming for Lakeside from 1982. It will be interesting to see the Women's machup in the NCAA. Before this meet Georgia was ranked 1 and Auburn was ranked 2 and they were separated by just 7 points. Florida was ranked 3 and so there could be a 1-2-3 sweep from the SEC Conference. On the Men's side Auburn beat Florida by 28 points. Before the meet Auburn was ranked 1 and Florida ranked 3. Daniel Cruz and Rachel Komisarz have a similarity. They both had accidents and started swimming competitively at a relatively late age. Daniel began swimming at 14 after a car hit him while he was riding his bike. His doctors recommended swimming as therapy after the accident and he has been swimming ever since. Rachel did not start competitive swimming until she was 15 after she had broken two vertbrae that ended her gymnastics career.
  • Lochte was amazing. I did not know about his 50 back he was quite inpressive in the 100 free and the 200 back 1:38 whoa wonder what he'll do at NCAA's though keep in mind back in 1996 or so Neil Walker from UT Austin had an NCAA meet where he was ON Neil went 20.7 in the 50 back 44.9 in the 100 back 19.08 in the 50 free then he broke his finger at the meet so we never got to find out what he would have gone in the 200 back or the 100 free, or 100 meter back i don't think neil was wearing a fast skin type body suit Back in 1981 Eddie held a time trial after the NCAA's where Rowdy Gaines set the world record in the 100 free 49.36 and william paulus set the record in the 100 m fly 53.87 point is I wondered what Neil would have gone in the 100 meter back that season if he hadn't broken his finger. American Short Course Championships are coming up in Austin I think Phelps is going to be there. Wonder how much of a priority he's put on the meet and if any records will fall.
