I just wrote an article on UV protection for my health column in Field & Stream. I interviewed a professional fishing guide who spends 240 days a year on the Gulf waters near Corpus Cnristi. I've always had the best luck with Bullfrog myself, so I asked him what he thought. He said that by far the best--in terms of thickness of the goop, protection against the sun, not needing to constantly reapply because of sweat or water--is AloeGator. Might be worth checking out.
I think Bullfrog does make a product that surfers like because it tends to stay on even after some abrasion by the sand.
One of the dermatologists I interviewed also suggested wearing a sunproof rash guard to protect your back while swimming.
