Fins - what are your recommendations?

It's time for me to get some fins. One brand recommended to me is the Fitness Fin found on the neofin.com website. I'm also considering the Tyr split fin. I've also seen mentioned here the Zoomers and Kiefer fins (although looking at the Kiefer website I see quite a selection of styles so I'm not sure which is for what!) Thanks for any feedback.
  • This probably sounds strange, but I have some split fins and they make my feet float. They're fine for kicking on my side or back, but when I'm face down, my feet won't stay under the water. I don't have that problem without the fins. Using a kickboard helps, but I don't like kickboards. Zoomers seem to work well.

I agree with my name-twin; zoomers are incredibly good, as far as working goes. There are typically two types: blue and red. The biggest difference is, the blue are straight, and more flexible. The red have a slight slant, and are more rigid. In personal experience, the red ones are a b-with-an-itch, but both are effective training. Steph #2

The split ones are fun to use and, if you really work them, you can get a good workout; however, the zoomers are good, too, and they also make you work, but may slow down your times somewhat. (alternatively, my coach recommended that one buys the regular fins and then cut them down to zoomer size. More frugal that way...)

I used the Zoomers for many years and liked them a lot, my times improved and it was fun swimming with them. Several years ago it seemed that they were aggravating my low back pain. I switched to Slim Fins made by Force Fin and I am enjoying swimming with these fins and they don't put stress on the lower back.

It really depends on your goal(s). Personally, I wanted to increase my leg definition and tone, tone, tone -- so I purchased the blue zoomers and I love them b/c they've given me the results I wanted. You might want to do a search and see what the other threads on fins reveal. Good luck! Steph :)
  • Save the cash - use the ones connected to your legs. They are much cheaper and much better for training.

Other types of fins that I've used seemed overly stiff, and also gave me the feeling that they were doing too much (since fins, for me, are a training tool that I use with the ultimate goal of finless swimming).

The Tyr swim fins are good but they will split on the foot pocket after a year I am not talking about the split ones but the regular swim fins. If you look at them from the side they are stright where as most others have the fin going down. The Zoomers are good too but not the same, they are for a different work out. They are very well made and last a long time. in any event dont rely on the fins too much

I've had great success with my fins from Sprint inside the pool and out in the ocean. The fins cost less than the more popular zoomers and are very comfortable. You can churn them real fast in the pool and plow through a stiff current around Makapuu Point if you prefer. They are great above coral reefs and swimming parallel throught the breakers and good fun in the slop. They are also great for body surfing or if you need one - Boogie boarding. They are tight enough, so you don't loose them when you get pounded at Sandy's. clyde
