I definitely do not want to take on the Ion-esque role here.
I was just looking for some help, ideas, suggestions, etc. and I thought I was being respectful... So, before my SARCASM (you're a doctor, you should know how to spell that) gets the better of me, and I offend people I have respect for I'll leave you two to your beer and pizza. :)

I accept that it's your definition of a team. I don't accept that it is THE definition of a team.
I don't have an issue with you or anyone else trying to define superteam. I don't think it will be easy, and hard to put them all into a single category and even harder to pass legislation.
We had someone in North Carolina registered with WCM a few years ago. You know him? He must have had a long commute to make it to the team workouts since everyone on your team swims in the same pool for the same coaches. I only bring this up to show that your team might accidentally get put into a superteam category. You might have more outsiders than you know.
It'll be interesting.

I have participated in relays at nationals as a result of the superteam, some very competitive and some not so competitive. All of them have been fun, and sometimes as a result I get to meet and hang out with people that I otherwise would not have met. If banding together like that encourages more of our members to remain members and participate in more nationals, I'm all for it. If we swam as a local team instead and there were less relay opportunities as a result, I could live with that also.
I thought Jim's post was well spoken, I just emphasized the part that I particularly agreed with. If I'm having a great season, then I will be on the 2nd age-group relay, at best (unless it is Sunday, and we are scrambling for swimmers). So from my perspective, it is mostly about having a fun relay, which makes it even more thrilling when we can sneak high enough to get a point or two.
Hey Jim, if Dave O'B is still swimming, tell him that my brother Chuck should be at Nationals. :)
I haven't been following this thread - way too complicated for me. However, once pizza and beer is injected, my ability to pay attention increases dramatically. I do owe Gull a beer, or maybe he owes me one for bagging the 100 free in the lane next to me last month!
If you all are going to Nationals in FL, I think my husband and I will be child-free, I'll buy you a beer and we can discuss things: spelling, relays, Lite Beer vs. regular, pizza, whatever :)
No wait: club beer vs. SUPERbeer :p
As a member of a "superteam" (Missouri Valley with nearly 230 swimmings, which is the whole LMSC), I find this discussion interesting for a number of reasons.
1. Most USMS rules are written to confirm to FINA rules, which require that four swimmers on a relay be registered with the same club. FINA does not give team award at masters meets, as far as I know, so the only relay award become critical and "clubs" are needed under FINA rules (again, which requires USMS to compile as a FINA affiliate).
2. Therefore, the USMS rules have been structure so that any swimmer who registers with USMS has to register with 1 of the 53 LMSC and choose a club (and in some cases there is only 1 club within the LMSC - which is by definition a "superteam").
3. LMSC are governed by bylaws and USMS rules. Therefore, if you don't want "superteam", the solution is to:

My dispute is that I don't think the system is broken and don't see Walnut Creek as an example of a team that has been wronged by an unfair system.
If the majority think there's a problem then changes should happen. If not then they won't. I'll live with whatever system is put into place and won't argue about fairness. Fairness will always be in the eye of the beholder.
I'm not going to publish a name without permission. Ask Kerry. He'll know and tell him I said hi.
