predicting your work-out

Now as I have enough experience with good and bad swimming days, I realized I can pretty much predict if my work-out is going to be easy and smooth or it is going to feel like swimming through jelly. It is really weird but I can just picture myself swimming before I hit the pool and my mind kinda tells me:"Yeah, it is smooth, it feels nice, good form" or "Man, you will suck today, you will move like a log".Amazingly, it gets proved in the pool - I swim just like my body felt I was going to swim ...Have you guys ever experienced that?

I once asked an aquaintance of mine (who has two Olympic bronze medals in the 50k walk) how he had coped with bad days in his training. He said he never had bad days - that if he felt things were going wrong, he readjusted his training goals. He usually slowed down and worked on his technique and, since that was more under his control, he was able to accomplish a valuable goal. I've since adopted that attitude and it really helps, especially during those times, over several days or more, when a series of workouts seem to being heading into the toilet. -LBJ

Today, I was unable to do my planned workout becasue I was having asthma problems. I adjusted it and did some. I didn't do my normal length but worked on technique and stroke count. It was still a bad workout. It took me almost 1 1/2 hrs. to do 2600 yds. Wheezing all the way.
