spitting: dirty or am I foolishly fastidious

In an effort to swim closer to home I started going to a community pool nearby. Just as I was about to get in a lane, the young woman in it stopped at the end, hawked something up, and spit it in the gutter. Then she did it again. The lifeguard to whom I pointed this out said that the gutters empty into the sewer. I don't think so, and even if the water is sent through the filters, is spitting in the gutter now acceptable? Wasn't when I swam in college 35 years ago, isn't at the (expensive) club I was trying to substitute for. But is this dirty or am I being foolishly fastidious? Your honest comments please!

Intellectually, I believe that the chlorine kills any bacteria or what nots that come out /off the body. Spitting might be the least concern I would have in a pool... However, overall, my grown up first impression is that --it is gross. I really didn't care for Amy Van Dyken spitting in her competitors lanes before a race to psych them out, but it is also part of the environment. --Sorry tangent there! Water get reprocessed via the filters and chemicals so I wouldn't worry about contamination. I feel that I must admit that in my younger days, I was a regular while using the kickboards to be streaming water out of my mouth like some sort of fountain sculpture. Relax, it’s a pool, only swimmers can appreciate the perfume of ode de chlorine. Unless there is a private pool or you have access to one of those at home current pools for oodles of money, this is what swimmers deal with.
