spitting: dirty or am I foolishly fastidious

In an effort to swim closer to home I started going to a community pool nearby. Just as I was about to get in a lane, the young woman in it stopped at the end, hawked something up, and spit it in the gutter. Then she did it again. The lifeguard to whom I pointed this out said that the gutters empty into the sewer. I don't think so, and even if the water is sent through the filters, is spitting in the gutter now acceptable? Wasn't when I swam in college 35 years ago, isn't at the (expensive) club I was trying to substitute for. But is this dirty or am I being foolishly fastidious? Your honest comments please!

If I wind up with a mouthful of water, I'm going to spit it out (thank you chlorine), but hocking something up is quite revolting. I hate people spitting period, I think it's a filthy habit, so no, I don't think you're overreacting.

Intellectually, I believe that the chlorine kills any bacteria or what nots that come out /off the body. Spitting might be the least concern I would have in a pool... However, overall, my grown up first impression is that --it is gross. I really didn't care for Amy Van Dyken spitting in her competitors lanes before a race to psych them out, but it is also part of the environment. --Sorry tangent there! Water get reprocessed via the filters and chemicals so I wouldn't worry about contamination. I feel that I must admit that in my younger days, I was a regular while using the kickboards to be streaming water out of my mouth like some sort of fountain sculpture. Relax, it’s a pool, only swimmers can appreciate the perfume of ode de chlorine. Unless there is a private pool or you have access to one of those at home current pools for oodles of money, this is what swimmers deal with.

I don't care for spitting in the sense you get a moutful of water and spit it back out. Now if you are spitting out the phlem it's nasty. I know chlorine kills bacteria but I don't want to see a big ol' wad of nasty floating by me. I've been sick for a week and it's really not that hard to get out and go to the bathroom to blow your nose, etc.

I think that's just disgusting, I don't care how much chorine is in the pool!!!
  • Maybe pools should put spitoons at the end of the lanes. Cause sometimes you just gotta hawk one up.
  • spitting: dirty or am I foolishly fastidious… Isn’t there a middle ground? Did you also point out to the lifeguards all those people who broke the rules by not taking a shower before entering the pool? Or are you just sporadically fastidious? If you think a little spit is dirty and disgusting, what about all those lotions oils, sweat, fecal matter, bacteria, and fungus that are deposited in pools by all those unwashed millions? And that stuff goes right into the pool water, not the gutter. And don’t even get me started on people who refuse to brush and floss before entering the pool. All that plaque, halitosis, and gingivitis…

Gross, and the gutter will not empty to the sewer. Somebody would get fired for a design that wastefully empties water the sewer. Can you imagine the cost invloved?

I have to agree with Rob... at our pool there are very few people who take a shower, and those that do probably don't take a soap shower in the nude!! In my days as a lifeguard that was a major frustration - if I remember right it was a law by the health department to do so. Now our Y pool has a sign that states "it is encouraged that you shower before entering the pool" I guess everybody wants to be politically correct these days. As to the spitting - I agree it sounds gross when someday starts hacking 'em up...on the other hand it seems better to get rid of your sputum in the gutter (this can be done without even being noticeable) than having one in your mouth and sooner or later it'll be in the poolwater.... I am more grossed out by the dirty bandaids, clumps of hair attached to who-knows-what floating around my face when I swim.:(
