(I somehow lost my post in the middle of reviewing it--sorry if this ends up posted twice! Now let's see if I can remember what I wrote.)
I was talking with a friend about swimming and she said she started "swimming for life" x number of years ago. I got the sense that she meant that it was more than a good workout--it kept her "alive." I have to admit that it has that kind of effect for me, too. At the risk of sounding too new-agey, it's nourishing in more than a physical sense.
What does swimming mean to you? How does that compare to other sports or activities you do? How does that meaning influence your goals and performance?

It's on the Ask Ande thread.
Now don't start crying after you read it ok?? posted by Blowfish
I have read the results and I have to admit that I am holding back the tears as best I can.....tears of laughter that is!  ....(Only j/k now Rich...calm down...the tears of laughter came as an uncontrollable flood only at the end of Ande's posting where Ande referred to you as the original SwimStud...LOL!!). Actually I thought you did very well for your first meet back in so long (especially in the 100 ***!). Congrats on the good swims. I am sure that I could not swim a 100 *** nearly that fast....(or even complete a legal 200 *** without blowing out a knee...LOL!). So I guess you didn't swim any non-breasstroke events yet....which I can understand being your first meet back and all. You did say in your latest limerick that you were going to try and pick up some events outside of breaststroke though....So I wil let you pick any non-breaststroke event that you want to race me in (nothing over 200 yards or meters though). Its the proper gentlemen's way you know ....to offer the opponent his choice of weapon before a duel.:D

p.s. And Rich, since you mentioned that we should all be able to at least make it through a 25 of each stroke, I say we add the 100 IM to our challenge list along with the 50 free. What do you think?
OK Jim, Now bear in mind I'm not great at either stroke:
Tonight I did dive 50 of Front Crawl with an open turn :32.
I also notched a 25 of Fly from a push at :17 maybe :18 but I think it was :17
The IM looks doable...are you prepared to swim in a bikini at your next event if I win? ;)

Thanks for acknowledging my first step towards UBD (Unviersal Breaststroke Ddomination) It was a hoot. I kind of hold the view that a swimmer shoulld be able to IM 25 of each---even if badly! It's the intent that counts.
50 Free. I'll post my time from tonight at training. I'll warm. Rest and dive in. Open Turn. I'm unpracticed at turns and don't feel like breaking my ankles on the deck b/c of a challenge.
I'll take it as serious as I can. Then we can take it from there, nemesis!

Jim, bicep man was almost as scary as the cat....I'm going with more because it seemed real-ish. posted by Seagurl
It was a very freakish pic thats for sure....I will try to post a link to it later for others who may not have seen it yet to enjoy. I am temporarily changing themes with my avatar though since Kristina posted her pic and so did the likes of blowfish (temporarily only though) and Geek and Gull. I found this old pic of me and my wife Susan from the early nineties (right after we first moved out to Tennessee from TX...so soon after we were married in fact). Notice what I'm holding in my lefthand though...(its kind of hard to see unless you look closely)....LOL!!

If I can drag my hulking frame on 25 of fly it's a deal..it's been a long while. The strength is there but the technique sure as sugar ain't!

Sure...why not. Actually I prefer wearing bikini's when I swim anyway...(just j/k of course). I figure that your chances of winning are about the same as winning 3 or 4 consecutive state lotteries anyway...LOL!!

p.s. You know I am ribbing you Rich....but I would actually like to see you get competitive in that event...so I will be pulling for you.
And thanks for sharing that lovely poem with us Beth! I wish I could say the same for George's poem though...LOL!!

Pulling for me...what at my ankles to slow me down?
Hehe I don't expect to set the world alight. I thnk it's like a badge of honour though for swimmers. a competency sort of thng if you will. A good ball player can play any position if needed, they may be great at a certain one but better than the average guy at the others. That's my POV. Obviously age, injuries and other factor would come into play. For instance, I think I have to be careful on my Fly kicks with my lumbar issues. I won't progress from 25's until I have the technique a bit better and the strength built up a bit (I feel it a little this morning--so much for machismo!).
I've notice I am a totally different swimmer when I dive-in though. I guess we are all that way. It triggers something (power output instict?) inside. anyone else get that sense? When I did my 50 Free I flew (at least in my terms) and felt like the Hoff rescuing someone on Baywatch.

Haha it was some commute too. Round trip to VA, andgot in 90 minutes at my pool before going home...MrsStud had no clue.
