The meaning of swimming

(I somehow lost my post in the middle of reviewing it--sorry if this ends up posted twice! Now let's see if I can remember what I wrote.) I was talking with a friend about swimming and she said she started "swimming for life" x number of years ago. I got the sense that she meant that it was more than a good workout--it kept her "alive." I have to admit that it has that kind of effect for me, too. At the risk of sounding too new-agey, it's nourishing in more than a physical sense. What does swimming mean to you? How does that compare to other sports or activities you do? How does that meaning influence your goals and performance?

The IM looks doable...are you prepared to swim in a bikini at your next event if I win? posted by Blowfish Sure...why not. Actually I prefer wearing bikini's when I swim anyway...(just j/k of course). I figure that your chances of winning are about the same as winning 3 or 4 consecutive state lotteries anyway...LOL!! Newmastersswimmer p.s. You know I am ribbing you Rich....but I would actually like to see you get competitive in that event...so I will be pulling for you. Pulling for me...what at my ankles to slow me down? Hehe I don't expect to set the world alight. I thnk it's like a badge of honour though for swimmers. a competency sort of thng if you will. A good ball player can play any position if needed, they may be great at a certain one but better than the average guy at the others. That's my POV. Obviously age, injuries and other factor would come into play. For instance, I think I have to be careful on my Fly kicks with my lumbar issues. I won't progress from 25's until I have the technique a bit better and the strength built up a bit (I feel it a little this morning--so much for machismo!). I've notice I am a totally different swimmer when I dive-in though. I guess we are all that way. It triggers something (power output instict?) inside. anyone else get that sense? When I did my 50 Free I flew (at least in my terms) and felt like the Hoff rescuing someone on Baywatch.
