Masters swimming

It sounds like Masters swimming is an adult thing? I want to join a club or something with instruction (coach) badly, but the only one near my area I've heard about is a club costing $120+ a month!! Could anyone shed a little more light on this?

Can you not swim with your school teams? $120 is a lot to spend to swim with a bunch of old slow Masters.
