New York City Pools

Mark- Pools/pool time are hard to come by in the city. The best pool in my opinion is Asphalt Green ( http://www.asphaltgreen.org/ ), but it is pretty far up on the East Side. McBurney YMCA has a pool, they are on W14th. two facilities in proximity to downtown / wall street - Chelsea Piers (a bit pricey) and there's a Y with a pool down there somewhere as well. When I moved to New York last year I visited most of the pools in midtown and wound up joining joined Manhattan Plaza Health Club where the pool is well run, clean and it is possible to find times that are not crowded. You pretty much do need to join a club in New York even if it is the Y. For the record some of the Ys (for sure the one at 47th and 3rd) are crowded, at least before work, lunchtime and in the evening, and do not seem to attract the faster or interval swimmers. Maybe if you go really "off hours" it would be better. The Y is not substantially less expensive than some clubs. You should be sure to see if the club you decide on will give a discount for your company. Some of these are substantial. I was pleasantly surprised to find out that this was the case for me.
