The finals of the first day, show: .) in the men 400 meter free final, Thorpe (Aus.) went 3:42.58 for #1, Hackett (Aus.) went 3:45.17 for #2, and Coman (Rom.) went 3:46.8x for #3; Coman -who is my fellow countryman, and I was telling you about him for years-, defeated Rossolini (Ita.) of the 2000 Olympics fame, Keller (U.S.) and Carvin (U.S.); .) in the women 400 meter free final, Simona Paduraru (Rom.) finished #7, with a fast time; .) in the 4x100 men free relay, Russia won; the fastest split was by Frenchman Frederic Bousquet at 47.03 -which is the second fastest split in history-, and fast splits (in the 47s) were recorded by Alex. Popov (Rus.) and Jason Lezak (U.S.); .) in the 4x100 women free relay, U.S. won, anchored by an ace 53.xx from Jenny Thompson (U.S.). He! he! he! :D ho! ho! ho! I post this, ahead of www.swiminfo.com and www.swimnews.com who are sandbagging...
  • I noticed in the splits that Peirsol had a negative time for his start (i.e., he jumped) in the 800 FR. So apparently a start judge has to call a DQ for a false start, right? Otherwise it seems the U.S. would have been DQed in the relay. Here's a link to the results: www.bcn03.org/.../sw-m-420f-f-00-fr.pdf

You are right about Thorpe not being in Hackett's league, but who is? Using current 2003 times Hackett has gone 14:47.07, next best is Jensen at 15:00.81. 20th best is 15:24.95. My guess is that Thorpe would be a major factor in the 1500 if he had picked that over the 100, but since he didn't this is only speculation on my part. Aside-I saw an interview with Hackett and he said he has been working on his turns and thinks he can take 6 seconds off his time.

GBR seems to be doing well. How about most disappointing? Coughlin (though she is sick) or Moses the Mouth?

Agreed GBR is doing well in this meet. Most disappointing. There's a lot to select from the US team. I think Coughlin deserves a pass due to illness--especially if she's able to come back in the 200 back later. Moses is a disappointment but this is not a big surprise. He doesn't do well when he has to race several world class swimmer--again, he pays for not swimming NCAAs. Hansen is the number #1 US breaststroker--though it will take the media a while to catch on. Klete Keller is also a big disappointment, also. He does have a chance at redemption in a few minutes. Maybe Phelps will give some of the underperforming US swimmers a much needed psyche up with a fast 200 free. We sure have waited a long time for a US swimmer to shine in that event.

I hope Popov doesn't do like in the last year European champs: peaking in the semis, which is the next round. I hope he peaks in the finals.
