When we return to swimming.

For me, it's now going on four weeks since my last swim. We were in Turks and Caicos March 7-14 for spring break where I was doing daily open-water swims along the beach. My last swim was a 3-miler on March 13. When we got back to the U.S., we had to go into mandated 14-day quarantine so I wasn't able to get out to go to the pool before they all closed. Who knows when I'll swim again...either open-water warming up (I live in RI), or pools opening again. I am maintaining fitness with bike rides, and a run here and there. And I know I there is other 'dry land' training I could be doing. But my concern when returning to the water is injuring myself because of doing TMTS. I'm just that kind of athlete. Raise you're hand if you think you're a candidate for a TMTS injury too. Dan

I'm thrilled that I was able to do 21 sessions in July, lake and pool. My goal for August is 20+ sessions, and to be within 5% of at least one PR.
  • “I just attach it to an aluminum plate and place it at the other end on the bottom. I only get a few strokes of swimming footage within quality of analytical use, but itâ€Tms enough to see whatâ€Tms going on (lately my br kick is messed up). I found either 1440 60 linear or 960 120 wide works best (hero7). For above water view, if you have a helping hand it is best to have them walk along side of pool at same pace. Now on the rare occasion I get to swim over pristine tropical reefs (increasingly rare now for many reasons) and local lakes I do have a setup I use where I attach my camera to my center mount snorkel to view the experience itself. Unfortunately, last years camera/snorkel setup is about 300â€Tm UW at bottom of lake Jocassee” thank you! I seldom have the luxury of a helping hand, so the idea of an aluminum plate on the bottom of the pool is tempting!

orca, I sent you a PM. I am thinking of going as soon as my gym ever opens, b/c I'm thinking most people will wait to see the outcome after it's been open a few weeks. The longer it is opened, I'm afraid the more lax people will get.

    I just completed another 5-session week. The sexiest bits were a 3:08 200m, a 6:38 400m, and a 13:33 800m. I'm getting there!! You will get there too!! :)

Another 5-session week in the books for me. I continued to advance as follows: 25m-17.5sec 50m-37.5sec 100m-1:25 200m-3:07 I suspect that it will be well into October when I finally equal a pre-shutdown time. Three and a half months off was a ***!!

Hmm, some Austin parks never closed. I'm swimming in a lake from/at an Austin park  I did find this story from a few days ago. I hadn't really thought of a lifeguard shortage, but it makes sense. Barton Springs and Deep Eddy keep a slim staff over the winter months. I swam there through winter, nearly once a week at one of them, and there were maybe 4-5 lifeguards at 'peak' times, when in summer there would be 2-3 times that many. I use that term peak in quotes since the winter peak at Barton Springs (say noon or so) might have 15 people in the water. On a typical summer day I wouldn't want to go near the place then. help-center.pissedconsumer.com/.../ I'm hopeful there will be some guidance in the next announcement of openings. The problem with swimming pools is that when probably 80-90% of average Americans say that they are, "going swimming," it means something completely different than when a typical USMS member says it. Great spotted about 80% of average Americans! Especially teenagers. When a group of teenagers come to "swim" in the pool, I don't even let my children get close to this pool.

Well, it's been nearly 2 months since I jumped back into the water, so I'll make this my last post in this thread. (Where do I go next? Swim Happy?) :) I put another 5 sessions into the books last week. I scored a 37.0 ish 50m and a 1:23.0 ish 100m. I'm getting there. I'm still shocked and grateful that the military pool is available to me. I know how lucky I am.
  • Someone tell me a story about flip turns. My last flip turn (i.e. swim in a lap pool) was on 3/5/2020. The next day we went on vacation to Turks & Caicos where I was swimming daily along the beach. My last swim there was on 3/13/20. Obviously when we got home on everything was closed. I didn't swim again until 5/4/2020...and that was in our home inground pool that I opened about a month earlier than usual so that I could do tethered swims...wearing a wetsuit becasue the water was only in the high 50s F. I did that for the next month until the open water was warm enough to get in with a wetsuit in the last week of May. All my swimming this summer has be in the open water...and it looks like it will be for a while longer. Remember flip turns? I know I once did them. Hope I can remember how. Dan
  • Renie - my son in law is/was the fitness coordinator at the local park district gym till yesterday when he was let go. They brought most employees back and filled his job with the Aquatics guy, since the pools are still closed there! They promised him he would not be let go for the last 5 months till he was on Thur! Why they did not try to open the pools like others in the area is a real question since they have both outside and inside pools areas is somewhat suspect to me.
  • Just finished my first lap swimming in a pool in six months. I was actually working a lifeguard shift at the pool...which is currently operating on a reservation-only basis...and no one was scheduled to show up for the 10:00am-11:00am time slot. So I got in and was able to get in 2400 meters that included a 400m warmup, and 20x100m free. I have been swimming most of the spring, and through summer...but in the open water, or thethered swims in my home pool. I had thought I might muff up my flip turns. But no! It's like riding a bike I tell ya. Dan
