Olympian Masters ?

I am looking for a list of Olympian Masters and what Olympics and events they particpated in. If you have such a list or know where one is, please let me know. Individual anecdotes are OK too. Background: I want to write to "Splash" magazine and ask them to feature some of the people on such a list when they write about great swimmers. I'm tired of reading (and having my kids read) about so-and-so great swimmer, who got to the Olympics, did great, and now swimming is behind them (i.e. they don't swim anymore). On the "mission statement" of Splash, they give lip service to a lifelong involvement with swimming, but they never seem to come up with an example of such a person. wiredknight

This sarcasm aside, I'd love to fly down to Texas and do a search through the micro-fiche of all the newspapers. Why don't we just stick to verifying olympic alternate status, Bill, since that is what Gail is avidly investigating and what is at issue. Agreed Fort. My comment was made in sincerity that at least a friend has something to show that her story may be viable. While still not proof, it gives a little credence, you'd think maturity and respect would win out among the rolemodels at USMS. I'd really let rip but I don't want to get banned for fragging the officer's mess...

Why don't we just stick to verifying olympic alternate status Because it's good to know what the swimmer did accomplish. Sorry if any of this appears sarcastic - not intended. The search had literally evolved into a search for a single matching reference, anywhere. And I am relieved that Frank found one.

Well, I for one have noted sarcasm and other covert oddities. But no matter. I believe there is other data. I'm not convinced it must all live in an official USA database to be deemed worthy. Things do go missing, after all. Who knows? Maybe Jimmy Hoffa is in the database...:bump:

No doubt. I'm in the database but under a changed/altered/prior name. lol. Wait...I had that wrong. Maybe Jimmy Hoffa had the official records on him when he went missing...

Good times, but not Olympic caliber times. Remember these are yards times, not meters. Kaye Hall of Tacoma Swim Club swam a sub 1:00 SCY 100 back in 1967. However, the results Skip found are from 1965, so she would have had three years to improve. At least we now have some kind of data. It's a good start! Bill: In the record progression for the 100 SCY back, I do see that Kendis Moore set a new record, presumably at Spring Nats in 1967, with a 1:01.30. That time is darn close to the 1:01.63 you cited. See: www.usaswimming.org/.../New In-depth SCY women.pdf It's too bad USA Swimming doesn't have all the results from past Nationals on their web site, but these in-depth record histories sure are interesting. I know if you sign up for Swimming World's web access you can download pdf's of old magazines. Does anyone know how far back their back issues go? Yes Kirk, it means she's on the map. More than we had yesterday...

  • To those of you who are genuinely trying to find documents to validate my claim, I thank you a lot. To those of you who have sinister reasons, Gail and partners, it’s turned into quite a witchhunt. Donna, I understand your feeling this is a witch-hunt; however Gail’s intentions are not sinister. Gail’s conversations with USA Swimming, the USOC, the USOA and with member of the 1968 team were and are being done to find facts. I’m sure if any of these sources would confirm your claim, that Gail would be one of the first people to congratulate you. I had mentioned several times on the forum that my USMS Top Ten records, 7 of them, are missing. Only one is posted. Where did those go? I have those little patches that are sent, so did I purchase them somewhere or sew them myself? Hardly. Please PM me with the year, course, meet, event, and name you swam under for each of your missing USMS Top 10 swims and I will have someone research why your swims are not included. Also please let me know to whom you requested an explanation as to why your swims are not included and if possible please send me any email requests. Mary Beth and Tracy receive a lot of questions on Top 10 times; hopefully your request did not fall through the cracks. By the way, what happens when you can’t find my records?Hopefully, you are also working with USA Swimming and the USOC to correct their omissions. If it was me, I could care less what USMS says, what would really concern me would be that USA Swimming and the USOC records are inaccurate, and I would be moving heaven and earth to have them fix this. I assume you are moving heaven and earth to get USA Swimming and the USOC to correct this omission. In you PM to me, please also include any contacts and correspondence with these organizations. No guarantees, but I do have some contacts and I may be of assistance.

I pop in every now and then to read about myself. I am amazed at the investigative work in progress, but I don’t think any of you are ready for Scotland Yard as yet. To those of you who are genuinely trying to find documents to validate my claim, I thank you a lot. To those of you who have sinister reasons, Gail and partners, it’s turned into quite a witchhunt. I say this because that’s what this now is. Last April, after Gail got wind that I was making a claim as an alternate, she contacted Bill V., and thus, the background detective work began. All of the files you are looking at were also scrutinized over a several week period. All of this was done off-forum. The end conclusion was I was not “AKC” registered and they even thought I had contradictory statements. I didn’t think I had; I just may have missed a few details because 40 years have gone by. Gail also posted on the forum a pretty heavy insinuation that I was not a truth-teller. She did this on April 24th and I believe the mods deleted those on April 25th. I have them. The reason this is now a witchhunt is this ground has been covered before and was closed. It has now resurfaced on a public forum. I’ve seen Gail post statements like Jane Hall didn’t remember me, well, I don’t remember her either, sorry Jane. And that I had never swum for Santa Clara. I never said I did, I said I trained AT Santa Clara. I was not a club member. I find it interesting that Gail has so many others doing this work for her. She never contacts me; did once, but has been silent since. When I saw that Frank Thompson mentioned he had found something, I had great hope. But it turned out to be pretty insignificant. And then I gave Fortress permission to post a photo or two, the most meaningful being the State Awards Blocks where I was standing as number one. . And now today someone has accused me of not being the person in that awards photo. Good grief! My measly State Record is, too, a fraud. My entire point here is two-fold: anything I show that confirms my statements is completely disregarded by the golden ones in charge. Any news articles are “frauds.” Thus, the outcome will always be that I had no right to make the claim I did. A very well designed machine here. After Bill V did not find my claims authentic, the word “expunged records” entered my thought process. My AAU state and national records are non-existent even though I have one photo here in Roatan that appears to offset that and was posted yesterday but has now been deemed a fraud. I had mentioned several times on the forum that my USMS Top Ten records, 7 of them, are missing. Only one is posted. Where did those go? I have those little patches that are sent, so did I purchase them somewhere or sew them myself? Hardly. You people won’t find anything on me; I’m a ghost swimmer. Most all of my swim accomplishments are completely missing. And if you think that this is NOT due to pathetic record-keeping or intentional deletion, wait until it happens to you. Now I do realize that before results were done electronically, more of this kind of thing could happen; that makes sense. And now even with electronic record-keeping, where are my USMS Top Ten Times? This leads me to the word expunged. No one at USMS has offered any kind of explanation; I was ignored. Additionally, I have been called an imposter, a charlatan, a liar, and just because the name Donna was not sitting right in front of those, doesn’t get you off the hook. Since I am the “study subject”, who else would those words be meant for? And gosh, I had enjoyed this forum so much, and there are more good people than not here, and to all of those good people (you know I know who you are), I have a lot of respect for you. Thanks for having an open mind. Instead of any kind of apology that this was handled badly and for a second time and now publicly, please donate to the charity. By the way, what happens when you can’t find my records? Am I a fraud or were my records lost? I know what Gail says because she can't be wrong; just ask her. I'm ticked but trying to keep it together. Donna

Donna I hope you realize I am on your side. I for one know that things have a way of disappearing and being changed. In 1958 I broke the Canadian record for the 100 fly and the 100 free. My club applied and did the application paper work for the 2 records. I did have an enemy on our swim club executive but he said he had submitted them properly. This was the same guy who made sure my Amatuer Card was suspended in 1963 because he said I was a professional swimmer which I was not. After that I started to swim in the marathon circuit. A few months later I checked to see if it had been published in the record books. Much to my surprise the guy who came second in both events had the records in his name.

Rob I think the problem here is there are statements made saying something is not true, when it may be true and probably true. It seems they ask someone who may not remember the facts and that becomes a fact. It is a shame that these accussations are made when they may not be correct. I am sure that my memory of what I do is better than anyone else's memory of what I did. It is sometimes very difficult to research many things. But my swim coach wrote every article that appeared in the Hamilton Spectator about every swim meet his club participated in until he passed away. All the Hamilton Spectator files are now computerized and I can access every swim meet I competed in til 1998 my last race.
