Scientists Find Out How Much Pee Is Really In The Pool

This new study says that one in five people relieve themselves in the pool. Both Ryan Lochte and Michael Phelps were questioned, and replied that they do it all the time. Lochte says that the pool "is the biggest and most expensive toilet of all time, and it's all mine". Our youth program has more than a dozen swimmers with inhalers on deck, 9 kids had pneumonia at the same time, and many masters have had their fare share of sinus infections. The health risks almost seem to outweigh the benefits of our sport at times. Just curious if this is really as widespread as they say. ...Without admitting to be a pool pisser, how many of you are aware of this practice, and how can we make it stop?! link to study Researchers estimated that over the 3-week period, swimmers released 7.92 gallons of pee into the smaller pool, and nearly 20 gallons into the larger one. Common or not, peeing in the pool isn’t so harmless. When uric acid in human urine mixes with chlorine, a toxic compound called cyanogen chloride and trichloramine is formed. CNCI can harm the central nervous system, the lungs and the heart, while NCI3 has been associated with acute lung injury.

So we'd be safe if pools stopped chlorinating the water!?!?! Dan Believe it or not yes. Good for Laundry, bad for bathing. Chlorine is a toxin, and there's not just a small amount of it in any given pool. When it binds with bacteria, chloramine levels can soar, and this is known for causing lung damage, and even cancer. If you walk in a facility that stinks like Chlorox, you can be absolutely sure that it's a literal petri dish. It's a huge business, pulling in well over $40 billlion dollars a year, and this in itself could be why there's not a big shift to change the way its always been done. ....Ionization for example is becoming much more widespread in new facilities and in system change-overs.
  • I don't understand this dispute. Why is it so danged hard to get out of the pool to pee? Most pools have the rules clearly posted and they say, don't pee in the pool. It's disgusting. Yes, I know there are a lot of bad habits and rude people. But geez, guys, how hard is it to pull your suit aside to pee in the toilet? Master's swimmers should be the leaders in pool etiquette. It doesn't matter how little or how much pee is in the pool, if you're the one getting a mouthful, or a face full, it's icky and it's rude. And yeah, it would be nice if pools didn't use chlorine, but until they build them with less noxious chemicals, we don't need to further pollute the water we swim in with with human waste.

Very cool Dan. ...your reply was never seen as snarky by the way! Thankfully the forum has very few memberswho feel the need. :) anyway...What a really neat pool, and an incredible healthy way to avoid the bad side effects of chemicals. ...Not to digress, but this one is my favorite. ...and I don't think they'd ever have this problem whatsoever! www.youtube.com/watch

think about this: 800 kids jump in the pool all of them wiz a full quart (not that they can but an easy number to use) 800x1qt = 200gal The sad part is...this equation absolutely holds true according to the study. The gross part is, that back in the tech suit days, many a masters swimmer (and age groupers) admitted to adding more warmth to the warm down pool rather than grappling with their suit. We have a huge facility for our meets which is a ten lane 50 meter (with a diving tank) ....Even though it may seem like a drop in the bucket, it's hard to imagine the equivalent of 4 or 5 oil barrels (of pee) being dumped into the water. The off gassing of the chlorine was always brutal at this place, and no wonder everyone had a cough or itch after a weekend long meet.
  • This probably explains why I cough so much when I am working out with my team, and not so much at 24 Hour Fitness. There are a lot of kids in that big pool as opposed to none at 24 Hour Fitness. Thanks, now I can tell them to stop peeing. I could scare them and bring my pool test kit and tell them it will turn a certain color if there is pee in it. Of course nobody has to know that I am manipulating the results to make them believe it. The pee pool dye is a myth.
  • Sit in the gutter and go ?!!! Does the coach - life guards see & tolerate this?? Something is seriously wrong!
  • Although I'll admit I never shower immediately before swimming so maybe I'm just as guilty as the pool pee-ers! i never have and never will. i probably have enough dried chlorine on my skin to sanatize a glass of water right now if you dont sweat chlorine, you aren't swimming enough!!!
