backstroke ~ bright sun protection ~ goggles

I swam 2000 yards backstroke yesterday, not wearing goggles, afterwards was dark red in the face and figured this wasn't good for my eyes. However, none of my 3 pair of goggles allow enough peripheral vision to see well. What kind of goggles have you found to give you the widest vision for backstroke? Might these work well? 10495 They have 180 degree vision, but still have the gasket that blocks vision. I was about to order them, then got the great idea last night to use regular sunglasses 10496and will try them next week. Let me know what goggles you feel would work best for the backstroke. I won't be doing any flip turns or diving with these.
  • So even with open turns, you don't go under water on your push off? That seems a much slower way to progress.
  • I wore the tinted Sporti 2 optical goggles that are similar to Speedo Vanquishers and could see just fine. I rather like the sunglasses idea though :)
  • Do you do open turns when swimming backstroke? It seems like sunglasses would come off for sure if you did flips.
  • If the sun glasses don't work, try a baseball cap or golf visor. :D I used tinted mirrored vanquishers and they've been great, until I pulled too hard on the strap and it broke the connection off.:bitching:

I go under water, somewhat like this, but don't do any dolphin kicks.

I do open turns, and the sunglasses fall off easily without the cap on, but the cap holds them firmly in place. As opposed to goggles, the sunglasses have rigid arms going back past the ears, and I've ordered a strap for additional security. The sun is almost directly overhead, so a baseball cap or visor would not work. I have three pair of swim goggles, and the sunglasses work far better than any of them.
