Hi, so I'd like To get in shape and would love to begin swimming I've know how to swim since i could walk but I've never done it for fitness and I know I'll get my butt kicked. I just don't know where to start or how to start. Getting over the mental barriers is probably the biggest thing. How are masters swim clubs? How long does it take you to get the strokes down? Is there specific teams and groups that will teach you these things? What should you expect your first day of practice? What should you wear your first day of practice without looking like a goof? And any other advice and tips that you could think of or any direction you could point me in would be great.

I would suggest just joining a masters team, most work with swimmers from all levels, and you'll get a coach to ensure you develop skills properly
  • Going to a coached practice is likely the best way to begin so you are on the right track. A suit is the bare minimum to wear without looking like a goof.
  • Working out with a masters group can be fun…physically and socially. Not to be a naysayer, but it might…MIGHT…be more than what you’re ready for right now. Most masters groups accept all levels of swimmers, and they’ll provide a structured workout for the various levels/abilities. But if you’re just swimming for fitness, a structured workout might be more than what you want…at least at this early stage. You might want to get a good swimming base before you join a masters group. But, if you think you’re ready…by all means go for it. Dan

Googles up on the forehead ok... around your neck... goofy or Chad Le Clos ... Wear jammers or square legs. Get some goggles that fit. Lower profile ones are better, no masks. Be coachable...
