What are the descriptions of the 5 basic swimming strokes?
my concern with your generic / easy to google question in combination with the "Indian Hair Supplier" link
is you might not be a swimmer and you just started this thread so visitors might click on the link.

freestyle
breastroke
backstroke
butterfly &
side stroke?
well there are only 4.
Butterfly - 2 arms recover and pull in sync as both legs kick in sync while on your *** (ie tummy)
Backstroke - each arm pulls and recovers seperately as each leg kicks seperately on your back
Breaststroke - like a frog on your ***
Freestyle - backstroke on your ***
that was the very simple version:

Backstroke - each arm pulls and recovers seperately as each leg kicks seperately on your back
That's how nearly everyone (competitively) swims backstroke, but if you look at the rules the only requirement is you be on your back. You could use a double-arm recovery if you wanted. You could use a frog kick, etc.
And the OP mentioned five strokes. Perhaps the "fifth" is individual medley (IM). An IM race is one where all four strokes are swum in succession.

Or it could be one of the Red Cross 6 strokes: Front Crawl (Freestyle), Back Crawl (Backstroke), Breaststroke, Butterfly, Elementary Backstroke and Sidestroke
I believe it is Eddie Reese, coach at Texas, who refers to underwater dolphin kick (done for up to 15M off the start and turns in fly, back and free) as the 5th stroke.
According to Livestrong the 5 styles are front crawl, backstroke, butterfly, breaststroke and sidestroke - if ya can't trust Lance who can ya trust :)

What about the trudgeon? No one has mentioned that...
Maybe add " allowed in competition sanctioned swimming" to limit the 4 strokes. In the IM the last must be "crawl= freestyle"
Actually it doesn't have to be crawl. It just has to be a different stroke than the first 3(not fly,BK or BR.) It could be flutterbutter(fly with flutter kick) or sidestroke, etc.
