Diving in with goggles

Hi, I am going to be in my first swim meet in a few decades. Goggle design has completely changed since I last competed back in the olden days. I tried diving in with my goggles and could not get them to stay on. They actually stayed on my eyes with the suction, but the straps kept dropping to my ears. I don't think they would stay on through the race with no straps. Any advice? I've already tried: Tightening them till my eyeballs were about to pop off Adjusting the position of the straps on my head a dozen times A couple different types of goggles. Any suggestions of goggles that tend to work better for diving off a starting block? Or tips on how to position goggles so they're least likely to fall off? Thanks!
  • Speedo makes goggles that I use all the time. They come in men & women face shapes that seem to cover all the have tried them. Yes - -haed too far down or up will shift goggles. Question --- in masters meets - can we wear TWO caps? I think I remember NO.

  • Thanks everyone...I will give those suggestions a try!
  • In my experience, head position when entering the water is key. If your eyes are forward, the goggles will fill with water, or come off. Instead, tuck your head a little, eyes down, and the goggles will stay on. If the problem is instead with the straps, try wearing two caps (I always wear two caps for races). The first cap can be of a lighter material, then the goggles, then the second cap, over the goggle straps. The second cap does a fine job keeping the straps in place.

Or just wear your goggles under a single cap. This works, too.
  • In addition to proper head position as Swimosaur mentioned, which is the most important factor, I've also noticed that if the straps are too low on one's head, they will tend to slip down as well. You might try moving them up higher up on the back of your head.
  • I go with a single cap over my goggle straps. Then, I stretch the front edge of my cap over the top of my goggles just enough that it doesn't impair my vision any.
  • I will try 2 caps in practice some time. Thanx.
  • I will try 2 caps in practice some time. Thanx. I used to wear two caps with the goggles in between the two; however, I found it to be too hot and constricting. I switched last year to competing with just one silicone cap with my goggles under it. It seems to work just as well, because I have never lost my goggles in a race. Putting Vaseline around my eyes helps the goggles fit better, and keeping the strap around the crown of my head helps as well. Tucking your chin on the start is a must. :agree:
  • No "goop" on my eye sockets cuz it messes with my contacts.
