Phelps is planning on swimming at the mesa grand prix in 2 weeks: swimswam.com/.../ Speculation he is swimming 50 and 100s.
  • I am curious to see what he decides to swim at the olympics. I do not see the 400IM in his program in Rio. I am predicting 200 Free, 200Fly, 100Fly, 200IM, 800 free relay, 400 Medley Relay.
  • Interesting to see what Phelps can do for a 50
  • I am curious to see what he decides to swim at the olympics. I think you mean "what he'll try to make the U.S. Olympic team in." It's not going to be as easy a road for him as it was in the past.
  • I think you mean "what he'll try to make the U.S. Olympic team in." It's not going to be as easy a road for him as it was in the past. I honestly feel that he will get through trials and qualify for the olympic team in every event he swims. Personally I still believe that even at 31 (2016) Phelps is still the most physically gifted swimmer in the world. The question I have with a 31 year old Phelps is whether he still has the motivation and the desire to win. I believe the olympics will be a challenge for him this time around. Then again, I think Bowman will put a program in place that will give him the best opportunity to medal at the olympics.
  • I think it would be very cool to watch him in the pool live!
  • Personally I still believe that even at 31 (2016) Phelps is still the most physically gifted swimmer in the world.Agreed, from an all-around perspective; there are certainly specialists who might be more talented in a narrower range, but no one, not even Missy, brings the breadth of talent. The question I have with a 31 year old Phelps is whether he still has the motivation and the desire to win.I would propose that, if anything, he's probably more motivated now than London. After Beijing, London was a requirement for him and a required set of events. Not that he didn't choose to go for it in London, but he HAD to due to lots of external forces, pressure, etc. I'd say that Michael's likely more in the mindset of a Masters swimmer who WANTS to swim/race (vs. HAVING to do it) and will have more fun as he experiments with different events. The road will not be easy, but I'll bet his motivation is there.
  • from NPR: www.npr.org/.../swimming-superstar-michael-phelps-emerges-from-retirement. Seems 50 fr, 100 fr, and 100 fly. These shorter events have less room/time for him to be dominant and for error. Anyone read why he said he decided to train after so emphatically claiming he would do otherwise? Agree with PWB about "wants" and "haves."
  • I think he can probably make the team in the 100 fly.He can probably be in the top 6 and get on a relay from the 100 free, but getting in the top 2 will be another matter.I doubt very much he could make the team in the 50 free. In other events,he can likely make it in the 200 IM,and likely at least a relay in the 200 free. I doubt he will want to swim the 400 IM or 200 fly.

I would bet he swims the 200 over the 100. I agree with you the 400IM is out.
