Hi! I'm 16 years old and am swimming on my high school team. My main events are the 100 fly, 500 free, 100 free. I'm 1:08 in 100 fly 6:03 in 500 1:00 in 100 free I've been swimming on teams for a very long time. I was on a club team for about 5 years, but then quit. I hope that I will be able to be on a college team, but I'm not sure if I will be good enough by then. What do you think? What sort of times do I need to be able to swim in college?
  • What do you think? What sort of times do I need to be able to swim in college? It really all depends on the college you plan on attending. First get your list of colleges you would like to attend and then look at their swim teams, if they have one. Most teams will list contact information and have surveys for interested athletes and many will have posted walk-on times. Another option is that a lot of schools have club teams (instead of or in addition to varsity teams). This is another option to consider and generally time standards for clubs are much lower than for varsity teams.

Swimming at the collegiate level is a very big dog world, but anything is possible. Here are the walk on standards for a very small Division II school in my town so you can have a few numbers to ponder. Swim hard and keep your nose to the grind stone and anything can happen. • Are you male or female? Are you training with a group coached by a coach or on your own? Are you in 10th or 11th grade? How tall are you? (are you likely to grow anymore?) If you want to swim in college, go for it, train hard train fast and see how good you can get.
  • Hey nat615, I'm glad you are enjoying your swimming! If the college swimming doesn't work out for please remember you can swim and compete with a master's team once you turn 18! Your times would be competitive in local master's meets and you might even be able to medal in Nationals!!!! I bet you'd love it!! Good luck and stay wet!!
  • You have some time left in high school to improve. Work hard, listen to your coaches, and see what you can do. You can strive to reach YOUR highest potential. Your goal of swimming in college is pretty broad. If you want to get a scholarship to an NCAA Division I school it will be pretty hard - but I am not saying you cannot do it. If you want to be a walk on at a Division II or NAIA school it is easier. There is a lot of room in between. See what you can do with your remaining high school years. You will never regret trying your best no matter the results - you will likely regret if you do not give it your best effort. Good luck!
