In a nutshell, it is suggested there was a current in the pool that gave some lanes an unfair advantage in the 50s. Maybe some end lanes are not so bad after all ;)
Or just eliminate 50s :bolt:
As someone commented, though, it could potentially factor into a race of any length. Imagine in a 100. I think I'd rather 'fight' the current on the first 50 rather than the second.
