It’s My Birthday and I’ll Swim if I Want To...

As part of the the USMS Fitness Committee's ongoing efforts to encourage new and exciting forms of fitness, we'd like to get a feel for what you do for fun in the pool. Today's topic: “It’s My Birthday and I’ll Swim if I Want to” Many swimmers do special things for a birthday swim such as swimming their age number of 50’s or 100’s. Some may be even more creative! What do you do?
  • I really would like to do a beer relay, but the most common thing I have done, and friends have done is the 50s and 100s theme, as you said, where the age=reps. I am very curious what others have done. I'd like to see anything else that varies from that format.... other than beer relays!:D
  • My birthday is Valentine's Day and the Auburn Masters meet is the weekend closest to that, so that's pretty cool. I'm turning 36, which is a square number, so I'll try to come up with something relating to that. I could always do 6 x 600 or 6 sets of 6 x 100 but maybe I (or you!) can come up with something more creative. (One of the perils of being the child of a mathematician is that you are always looking for "cool" features of numbers.) I have a round birthday coming later this year, and being a math nerd myself, I will have to think of something. This discussion reminds of an article I read about the person who "runs" (both on foot and administratively) the Boston Marathon. He started running his age in miles on his 12th birthday and has continued ever since. He just turned 57...He has since spread the mileage over a number of days. As he puts it "my game my rules."

Still, to have the 3600 total, in 6 sets of "600" (w/ 1:00 rest between each 600): 1 x 600 Free 2 x 300 Free @ :15 rest & neg. split the 300s 3 x 200 IM - just 'cause @ ~:30 rest 4 x 150 Back @ :15 rest, then :10 rest, then :05 rest 6 x 100 Free @ 1:20 (good enough??, or push it with 1:15s) 12 x 50 Odds Back/Evens Free @ 1:00 - cruise the backs, sprint the frees
  • I'm turning 42 in March - perhaps the Answer to the Ultimate Question of Life, The Universe and Everything (or perhaps not quite, the Answer may be 6x9=42 in base 13): en.wikipedia.org/.../Phrases_from_The_Hitchhiker's_Guide_to_the_Galaxy I usually swim LCM, stroke count low-mid 40s. My current usual 100 sendoff is 1:40. 40.xx for a 50 sprint (though I could/should be faster - I've done 17.xx from a push for a SCM 25). One could do a lot of things with all that.

Since 50 is the new 40 (or something like that), when I turned 50 my teammates and I at Nitro swam 50 x 50 @ :40. And since it was my birthday I was allowed to draft behind Olympian Kirk Stackle.

  • The entire team (USA-S) is forced to do a 200 fly or 400 im on my birthday. They are my favorite events and kids won't usually do that in meets if they can avoid it...so the coaches put it on 'em. It's been a tradition for the past five or six years.
  • Oh, wow, that sounds awesome. My birthday is tomorrow. Any Olympians out there care to volunteer for drafting duty? :cake: Anna Lea Matysek HAPPY BIRTHDAY ANNA LEA! :cake: :party2: :chug: :dj_dance: :presents2: :wine:
  • I like this workout...but I am curious: is it based on SCY, SCM, or LCM? I guess SCY, but add :10 per 100 or so to intervals for SCM. :)
