I've been lurking for awhile on this forum and always enjoy reading the advice from other members on here. I finally joined USMS last week and will be swimming my first meet in 12 years this weekend. Anybody else on here swimming in this meet? I'm excited to get some real times this weekend...something I can use for motivation to keep swimming and getting better. I will be swimming the 100 fly, 200 back, 50 free, 100 IM, 50 fly, 50 ***, 100, free and 200 fly:drowning:. I've attached the psych sheet for anyone interested.7066
I do have a question about some rule changes since the last time I swam in a meet. Do most masters swimmers utilize the single dolphin kick on the *** underwater pull? I know it's legal now, but has anyone been dqed for it? Also the two hand touch has been changed to the simultaneous touch correct? Your hands can be uneven as long as your hands touch simultaneously? Any other rule changes I should be aware of in the last 10 years or so?

Almost everyone I see does the dolphin kick.People who push the envelope by doing the kick early by separating the hands slightly, doing the dolphin kick, and then finishing the pull are in danger of DQ if the judge doesn't think they really separated their hands. If you do the kick after you have clearly started the pull you will be OK.

See you in the 200 back, where I think we are in adjacent lanes!
... back to *** turn?
Da Rulez!
Part 1:
101.6 Individual Medley
101.6.3 Turns
B The turns when changing from one stroke to another shall conform to
the finish rules for the stroke just completed, and shall be as follows:
(2) Backstroke to breaststroke—The swimmer must touch the wall
while on the back. Once a legal touch has been made, the swimmer
may turn in any manner, but the shoulders must be at or past the
vertical toward the *** when the swimmer leaves the wall and
the prescribed breaststroke form must be attained prior to the first
arm stroke.
This is a good meet and well attended. I've done it for a decade now.
The breaststroke rule states, "After the start and each turn, a single butterfly kick, which must be followed by a breaststroke kick, is permitted during or at the completion of the first arm pull." There is nothing in the rules that state the arms must separate. That is an interpretation of the rule that is not contained in the rule. And, as Stark states, about 99% of folks do it now, although it is not required.
Thanks for the info Allen and aquageek. Just wanted to make sure I didn't get dqed in my first masters meet. It feels much more natural to do the dolphin kick when I begin the pull than to dk then do the pull. Does anyone do the back to *** turn? I noticed last year Davis Tarwater was dqed in the 400 IM. I assume it was from this turn.
I'm looking forward to a good turn out and swimming against some fast swimmers.
Awesome! I can't wait. It seems like 200 back and 200 fly are very unpopular at masters meets. So far only 5 have swum the 200 back and only 2 in 200 fly in my age group.
Diann Uustal shattered the national record in W65-69 SCY 200 back.

Cool I didn't realize anyone broke records. Did they announce it?
Welcome to masters swimming! If you are a fan of the sport, as well as a swimmer, there is a lot to see at a masters meet! Yes, it is fun to watch 22 year old AJ Jayaprakash swim 58.06 in the 100 ***, and 40 year old Erika Braun swim 51.03 in the 100 free, but not all of the action is happening in the center lanes of the fast heats. If you know what to look for, you can see exceptional performances by world-class athletes like Diann Uustal, Robert Poiletman, and Shirley Loftus-Charley, none of whom are necessarily swimming in the fast heats, but all of whom have broken masters world records. They are always inspiring to watch. You may even find yourself seeded, as I once did, in the same heat, in the lane next to Leslie Livingston, when she broke the world record in W50-54 SCM 100 back. It was not the fast heat!
You have to know what to look for! Even the meet officials don't know until after the meet if any records have been broken. Sometimes record attempts are pretty well known in advance, and sometimes they happen under the radar. There is a lot going on at a masters meet!
How were your swims this weekend?
Aside from getting totally smoked by a certain newbie in the 200 back, I had a good weekend! I was but 0.35 off my best time from 2 years ago in the 200 IM, and only 0.09 off in the 100 free. Times in other events were not exceptional, but they were not too slow either. No personal worsts!
The meet was well run and each session only lasted a few hours. I had just enough rest in between events to warm down and recover. Btw loved the color led scoreboard with our names on it and the split.
I agree, the meet was very well run! Perhaps even too well-run; unlike you, I didn't get quite enough time to rest between events. I will have to keep it in mind when picking my events next year. I loved the pool!
Good luck! South Carolina has a wonderful, stable, annual series of masters meets. I've been to the LCM meet in Greenville in the summer, and the SCM meet in Columbia in the fall. Both are well run, great fun, and held in excellent pools. Are you going to the Feb. 8-10 SCY meet in North Myrtle Beach? Unfortunately, that is too far away for me. Have fun!
Hopefully I will become more familiar with the names and what to look for at masters meets. I saw in the results 91 year old Ole Larson swam the 1000 free and 83 year old Irwin Stolz swam the 1650. Now that's impressive! Glad to here you had a good meet overall. I was really pleased and surprised with most of the times I swam. I feel like I had a pretty good Sunday. My 50 fly time sort of surprised me. I swam a 26.04 and wasn't expecting to be that close to swimming in the 25's.
I did pay particular attention to the fast breaststrokers as that used to be my best stroke in age group. Now it seems its the hardest to get up to speed. Maybe I should venture over to the breaststroke lane for some advice. I think one of my problems is its easier to slack off in practice when swimming *** than it is other strokes.
