finger spread on catch

dec 2012 swimming world magazine has picture of champion freestyle swimmer Yannick Angel from underwater during his catch. He has three middle fingers tightly together but little finger splayed out at 30 degrees and thumb significantly abducted. This seems to go against common belief in slightly spread relaxed fingers as the most efficient position. Chris Hiatt

Last night at team practice, I tried diff finger positions. Well -I still like mine close , but not tightly . I don't actually believe (yet) in this *fingers slightly open* thingy. I, like most people, regularly see elite having fingers very relaxed upon hand entry/downsweep. But what really matters is what comes after. And it's very very hard to find reliable footage of - for instance - finger position during the final upsweep. I think that it is fallacious to believe that fingers remain open just because the footage displaying that they are early into the hand's underwater pulling path shows this.

Swimming at Worlds will be held at the Aquatic Complex at ParcJean-Drapeau, the outdoor complex. Montreal and Quebec City have been on my travel bucket list for years, so, rather than going this year as originally planned, we're putting it off until 2014 for Worlds. :agree: Oh I see, then it'll be this pool here: Freestyle Single Arm Drill (Unleashed) - YouTube

Thanks Elaine, glad if it can inspire you in your single arm drill training.

Hey, I know that wasn't the point of your post, but I really liked the video content. I do a lot of the one arm drill myself, my favorite drill. Thank you so much. The goal was to reposition this drill a bit, as it's too often documented in a way that's restrictive for no solid reason (e.g. breathing always done on opposite side, etc). Well, at least it's my take. This is just one of numerous drills that will get documented in this manner. DVD (the Volume 1) should be ready by March 31th. At least 12 drills should be documented, along with other goodies such as quick pool side dryland program, stuff you can do home to improve your swimming. Volume 2 (already scheduled for 2014) will have many more drills coming from various sources (whereas Volume 1 mainly features SwimSmooth friendly drills).
  • Nice video BUT he's cheating using his other hand to pull thru maybe 1/4 of a stroke ????
  • I use the middle and ring finger apart technique, Vulcan style. Also good for catching (and pulling on) the lane line during backstroke workouts.
  • More cheating on back stroke --- it's running rampant !!
  • MERRY CHRISTMAS! Back to your regularly scheduled finger spread on catch thread: I keep my fingers held adjacent to each other after catch. Keeps golfers elbow symptoms minimal. During catch I open the fingers some and try to hold the water.
