How dare you disparage the world's greatest event ... though, truth be told, I like it even more in SCM than LCM. :applaud: Second! It's truly the world's greatest event, covering almost every aspect of swimming. 'The Black Widow of swimming' is merciless, devouring any pretender who gets too close. My favourite part, except for the finish, is the first pullout of the breaststroke leg; each time having the feeling that 'this time I may just not make it to the surface'. As for SCM vs LCM, that's a tough one. LCM is 'true' swimming, with the Olympics and the World (and European for us) Masters Championships. The SC world is divided, weakening the position of each pool length. But swimming short course is fun; it feels fast and not as grueling. And I have only ever raced the LCM 400 IM outdoors, and I always get lost on the backstroke leg, weaving from rope to rope. I'm a weak backstroker, but even for me it's embarassing to negatively split a 400 IM. -I swim, therefore IM
  • Sounds like a new IM challenge event for That Guy to attempt. :D Fly = sidestroke Back = elementary backstroke *** = breaststroke Free = trudgen crawl 3000 IM that one That Guy! :bolt: I just did!* I've got the AA ranking unless you manage to beat my time :anim_coffee: * citation needed]
  • Meh, I'd respect it more if it didn't include -- nay, emphasize -- breaststroke, an obsolete stroke. Why not include trudgen crawl and sidestroke while you're at it? Awwwww come on,are we back to that old strokist nonsense. Some people don't like backstroke, some people don't like fly, some people don't like distance free, some people don't like sprinters. What makes IM great is that it has all the strokes so you can't hide your weaknesses, but have to improve them,or do you want to sound like the"triathletes"who say"this triathlon would be great if we could just eliminate that :censor: swim".
  • ... It's truly the world's greatest event ... 'The Black Widow of swimming' is merciless ... Having just fallen off the turnip truck, I've never heard that before. Here's a cite from 2009. It's full of great quotes. Phelps came to fear the 400 I.M. for the usual reasons: the muscle aches, the nausea and a temporary paralysis that can make breathing difficult. “It’s one of the hardest races,” he said, “and I’d like to try other events.” If it's tough enough to intimidate Michael Phelps, it's a tough race. ... sure enough, Lochte plans to follow Phelps to the sideline. “After this summer I’m done with this event,” he said. Lochte, ditto. Of course, we all know how that turned out. Katie Hoff: "It doesn’t matter how hard you train or how many ridiculously horrible I.M. sets you do, the race doesn’t get any easier. It might get a little bit easier, but it’s still going to hurt more than any event out there.” ... “I get the most nervous for it, I have the most pain,” she said. “It’s just not a pleasant event." More: The 400 I.M. is the decathlon and the Belmont Stakes rolled into one eight-lap gut-check. Bowman ... said: “You’ve got to be a distance swimmer, you’ve got to be a sprinter. You’ve got to do all the strokes, you have to have strength. You have to cover every base and that requires a training program which is puritanical.” pwb, you lazy slug! My favourite part, except for the finish, is the first pullout of the breaststroke leg ... I have to throttle down my last length of backstroke just to make it. The other three pullouts ain't apple pie, either. It's easily the best event in the pool. Let's race the 800 IM!
  • Awwwww come on,are we back to that old strokist nonsense. Are there really people taking this thread seriously? Well, I never...!
  • Let's race the 800 IM! I'm in! And, while we're at it, let's add some distance fly events. 1650 anybody? I'm in for that, too! :agree:

Meh, I'd respect it more if it didn't include -- nay, emphasize -- breaststroke, an obsolete stroke. Why not include trudgen crawl and sidestroke while you're at it? As I've maintained in other threads, breaststroke should be segregated as a separate sport for those specialist who can't handle the other strokes -just the way Rhythmic Gymnastics is a completely different sport for the cute little artsy people who weren't good enough for regular Gymnastics. Rhythmic Gymnastics has several events, the ball, hoop and ribbon come to mind. Our new aquatic sport could have several events too, dedicated to frog and scissor kicking. We would then have breaststroke, trudgen crawl, side stroke and elementary backstroke!!
  • I'm in! And, while we're at it, let's add some distance fly events. 1650 anybody? I'm in for that, too! :agree: Oh, you're stopping at 1650? There's a 5k waiting for you! In a pushback year, when it's just business, the Business of Butterfly commenced in relentless fashion. Big Shoulders butterfly pioneer Tom Boettcher was back for his thirteenth 5 K all fly, pounding out a sturdy swim. Tom is coming off a butterfly and ballet summer ... There is an able New Member of the elite Butterfly Club at work in the waters -- last year, Tom Maude did half his 5K butterfly, inspired by Boettcher's example and determined to make it all the way this year, pushy water or not. Today, despite the pushback, a quite pink Tom Maude emerged from the water a few hours later but better for the challenge, stroking the whole way, 5K, all butterfly. The world's greatest event isn't even offered in a meet, that being the 3K. Until it is, the pure and true swimmers have to settle for a paltry 1500/1650. You mean both those guys who been in a pool and never peed there also race distances? Who knew?
