32 meter pools

Does anyone know the history behind why anyone would build a 32 meter pool in the US? Maybe a space issue? It is obviously not used for regulation meets - any info would be greatly appreciated. Have a great weekend.

Yes, it would be 33 1/3 YARDS, not meters. The main (older) pool at the Olympic Club in downtown SF has this configuration.
