Bussard's shadow will follow the sport of swimming for the foreseeable future. He wasn't known as the innovator for nothing. ie; the grab start, the freestyle flipturn, the transition turn from back to ***, the NCAA honest effort rule, the tradition of shaving the head for important competitions, pouring home water into enemy waters. All are documented changes in the sport of swimming that got their start at the Student Aquatic Center at UT, among others. A fierce opponent of title IX he was. Petitioned against it to the NCAA when it was created, stating that it would lead to gender inequality for men of sports in the future. (not to far off the mark he was) The SEC would not be the swimming powerhouse it is today if Bussard didn't dominate the conference during the 1970's. It made the others catch up. Florida didn't catch them until 1979. During the eighties even LSU got in on the action. The UT guys team did a very good job this year for being surrounded by death and downfall for the better part of 2 years. They should be commended. T - E - double N - E - double S - double E, Tennessee! Long live The Great White Bird.
