Lance Armstrong

Lance Armstrong posted on Twitter that USMS Spring Nationals is "on his calendar.". How great would that be for us!?!!
  • This would have no place at a USMS meet, a forced charity gig. Rowdy gives plenty of his time and poses for free. If you want to donate, USA Swimming has a foundation, along with the USMS SSL Foundation. Our LMSC also allows donations. Many swim meets will have raffles for gear at events, which is fine but they usually support USAS, USMS, or the club. I'd rather the money be used to fund security to keep wookiee away from the venue and/or have gull give heart healthy lectures after the 50s. Aren't we past being star struck and paying for photos with people at our advanced years?
  • This would have no place at a USMS meet, a forced charity gig. I agree. I think it would be very cool if Lance swims, but he should be there as a competitor first. Obviously people are going to want to meet him and watch him swim, but it shouldn't devolve into "Come LIVESTRONG with Lance and USMS!"
  • I agree. I think it would be very cool if Lance swims, but he should be there as a competitor first. Agreed ... also, let's be clear that Lance just tweeted he was coming ... the idea of him posing for money was put forth here ... not by him.
  • Then just make a donation to the charity without having to have a special reason to make the donation. I already did. I don't need a special reason, but it just may be what motivates others to donate to a worthy cause.
  • Agreed ... also, let's be clear that Lance just tweeted he was coming ... the idea of him posing for money was put forth here ... not by him. Yes, that's right. And, it was just an idea. :worms: I can see the downsides of it, including this: If we do this for Lance, where would USMS draw the line if others wanted to come forward and offer the same arrangement? And, what if their charity doesn't meet USMS' criteria? Saying "no" would be tough. Again: :worms: So, hey, I am willing to accept this idea isn't exactly the best idea, but I thought it was worth a try to see if might stick. If USMS thinks it's a good one, they'll go for it. Otherwise, I will just keep making my donations as usual...
  • I already did. I don't need a special reason, but it just may be what motivates others to donate to a worthy cause. No, no, no. Not at a USMS meet. If you are gonna do this, set up a string of booths and let all the "worthy" causes participate on their own dime. Hall, Jr didn't pimp ADA or JDRF and USMS doesn't need to pander to any charity for a swim meet. Also, given the diversity of our membership, this is more likely to cause controversy than compliments. I don't think anyone is joining USMS for junk like this. And, I'm not sure people need to be "motivated" to spend their money on charity at a swim meet. I get nickeled and dimed to death by raffles from kid's stuff, civic stuff, religious stuff. Keep it away from my swimming!!
  • If Lance wants to swim in a meet great.I don't know him,but I expect he is coming to swim, not to be a celebrity.I say, treat him like a regular guy, make him feel welcome, make him want to come back.

OK; all points in this and previous posts in this thread well taken. And, they are all good points. So, on that note, I will concede defeat and :bolt:. :D

Oh, but if I'm at a smaller meet with him I'm darn sure putting a 5:08 for my 500 time and dropping the hammer, ninja style. My actual time from October is 5:07.99. Bring it Lance.
  • How cool would it be if USMS could get Lance to sign autographs and/or pose for photo ops with all proceeds going to the Lance Armstrong Foundation? I would gladly stand in line and make a donation for that opportunity to meet Lance and support such an excellent foundation! :applaud: Personally, I would love to see the proceeds go to the U.S. Masters Swimming – Swimming Saves Lives foundation, but a 50-50 split would be okay.:applaud::applaud::applaud:
