Swimming World is reporting he is now an official member of USMS. This leads me to this question. If he is a registered member, swimming at a usms meet, why should people have to pay to get a photo or autograph?
Olympians and national team members don't charge us for autographs at any of the masters meets, so why should he get too? If USMS paid him to make an appearance, I would understand that reasoning. By signing-up for USMS, people shouldn't have to pay to have a photo op with another USMS member.
People wouldn't "have to pay"; you're missing the point. The point of setting this up would be to raise money for his foundation, as well as the USMS foundation, as Rob suggested. People would pay because they would want to make a donation to worthy causes. If something like I am suggesting had been set up in Mesa with Rowdy Gaines, I would have gladly done it. Same goes for other Olympians, if the cause they are representing is worthy. (My definition of worthy includes a 3 or 4 star rating at CharityNavigator.org.)
