This year has been the first year of my three swimming so far that I've kept a log of my yardage. I didn't realize it at the time, but in doing the math this late night/early morning, I crossed 1,000,000 yards on Wednesday, November 16th. It happened sometime during my early morning workout at Santa Clara Swim Club, probably at the exact same moment I was resting at the wall and the flying hand of the hapless lady I shared a lane with whacked my nose! My nose was sore for the rest of the day.
These are my totals per month:
Jan: 100,700
Feb: 106,750
Mar: 110,350
Apr: 121,840
May: 68,261
Jun: 106,948
Jul: 79,725
Aug: 50,950
Sep: 107,100
Oct: 63,850
Nov: 111,000 (so far)
Has anyone else crossed a million yards this year? Getting close?
Congrats! I'm not going to get to 10^6 this year, but I'll be close. As of today I've done 812,000 yards and change. I'll probably end the year somewhere around 930,000 yards.

You went 1,027,834 yards in a year! Thats an 86,000 avg a month!
Great job keeping track of your yardage like that. You could pull a lot of good info out of doing so. How did you go about it? Do you record your total yardage every practice in a logbook or something? or even the whole practice. Then you could take daily totals for strokes/drills/kicks/etc if you wanted to. get a years worth of info (as you have) could give you a cool insight or all kinds of stuff really.
I think I will start doing this. :applaud:
I have never kept track of my yardage, I used to just swim. and not think about it. I've always wondered how many yards or miles i've swam in my lifetime. Looking at that black line with a vertical side glance of the pool deck...

If you are a USMS member, you can keep track of your yardage in your online FLOG (Fitness Log) which is part of your MyUSMS page.
You can then click a button to enter the Go The Distance event, where your entire year's yardage is automatically totaled each morning and posted in several reports.
Not a member of USMS? Just click the red Join/Renew button from the home page to join online!
I did almost 60,000 yards this week, including four doubles and a triple! Additionally, I have a two-day meet this weekend and I'm putting up in-season best times. Not bad for coming right off the most grueling week of the year. That's some impressive yardage for a week. I upped the yardage before Nationals this year and it paid off big. Sounds like you are set up for the same thing. Good luck in your meet!
1x10^6 yds is gerat. Good going!
My current year-to-date total according to my FLOG:
401.89 miles (=707,319 yards, =646,772 meters)
Last year I did 399 and was really annoyed not to get 400 (on account of the pool closing early on my last swim day) so I'm happy to pass that already this year.
And what is the deal with this GTD thing? If you enter GTD do they really send you free stuff just for FLOGing your workouts? When do you have to enter?
Awesome job. I've far exceeded any previous year of masters' mileage this year and have exceeded my goal, but I'll not get to 1M yards. I will set that as a goal for 2012, though.
Thanks for pointing out the FLOG! I entered Go the Distance and inputted my yardage from all year. You can check out my pretty awesome November here. :) I did almost 60,000 yards this week, including four doubles and a triple! The mesh bag is pretty nice and I look forward to the swim suit (500 miles). The $5 gift certificate was more like a coupon though and could only be used for Nike swim products.
