SCM Championships

At risk of "beating a dead horse"....at least in respect to broaching this topic again! I had a number of conversations at convention with people who would like to see USMS move to a 3rd Championship meet in the fall for short course meters. There are some great Zone meets going on...when you have 600+ going to Long Beach or New England why not up the ante a bit? Thoughts?
  • Although the Championship Committee works pretty hard in supervising two nationals per year, they are all great people and probably would be delighted to increase their workload by 50%. But I'm equally sure that all the people here who "just want to give it a try and see if it dies" would also be perfectly willing to form the basis of an ad hoc "SCM National Championship Committee" (Chair: Paul Smith). I'm looking forward to seeing the results of their work. :bolt:
  • I voted yes -- as I have remarked previously. On the east coast, I feel like we rarely have a chance to swim SCM; almost every meet is SCY. But will people give up LB or NE Champs in favor of a National Champs? Or will they attend both meets? I'd go to both.
  • I voted no because I thought that 3 national championships was too many to ask of the dedicated that go to all the big meets (which is not me, by the way). But I guess if people want to put one on, that's not really a good reason not to try holding one....

Are they worried there would be less interest? I believe that the primary drivers of nationals attendance are location and timing, but maybe people are just more comfortable with SCY. I think this is it - relatively few people have access to SCM pools, compared to SCY.
  • Long course facilities with moveable bulkheads can be configured as two 25m courses. Federal Way is one such facility. 2xSCY yes, but not 2xSCM unless the bulkhead is infinitesimally thin.
  • 2xSCY yes, but not 2xSCM unless the bulkhead is infinitesimally thin. actually, it is very possible for a "long course" pool to be able to set up as 2xSCM with normal width bulkheads. a typical (newer) LCM pool is more than 50m, in order to accommodate the bulkheads. case in point- UMd's pool in College Park is actually 52m from wall to wall, in order to make room for the 2 one meter wide bulkheads. i would assume other pools are the same, or are 51 meters wall to wall with a single bulkhead.
  • I am not aware of any facilities that have two 25scm pools but doubt that even a national championship would draw over a 1000 swimmers. I think Long Beach had close to 800 in recent years...spread that over 4 days and you have a very manageable meet. The IU Natatorium in downtown Indianapolis has 2 SCM pools + 2 warm-up areas (an additional pool and big diving tank) The Annual Fall Classic Meet SCM is held October 29-30 in this very pool! Come check it out!
  • Sure, but the question is whether the extra swimmers they may......... When can we expect a bid from Mesa? That is the point, exactly! Not to pick on Tall Paul (especially BEFORE I go to his swim meet!), but i'll be the first to admit I am doing NOTHIN' about it. Calling all red hens!!!!! Who's going to do the heavy lifting and make it happen, so that the rest of us can complain about the date, meet format, order of events, parking, food selection for Gold Medal sponsors, etc. I am ready to do that part! Uh, that's assuming I go at all.

  • Has there been consideration of this at Convention? Not this year. Jeff Roddin probably knows if it's been discussed before. I would imagine running a meet as a national championship requires more work than as an LMSC championship. There will need to be a significant return, and I am not at all sure that there would be. Two national championships a year is plenty, IMO; does USA-S do more? I agree that it is more work. Even though USA-S only runs two Nationals, one of them is in December. NCAA's is practically a third Nationals. For example: last year the NE meet was also a zone championship; I don't think there were any more swimmers than the year before, when it wasn't I can believe that, but to me there's not much of a difference between being a LMSC champ or a Zone champ in an event. If I have the chance to be a National champ, that's more enticing. I think there's going to be more high level competition if a meet has the Nationals label.
