Will someone explain to me this idea that certain people "have no business wearing" Speedo's or bikinis? Why would anyone take it upon themselves to determine what others should or shouldn't wear? So what if some woman in a bikini is too plump or too old in your opinion - as long as they are wearing what's comfortable for them, how does it hurt you in any way??? I've never understood this concept! As if my eyes are entitled to some kind of protection from things I don't particularly want to see?
Old-timers on this site will remember a much posted photo of a fellow wearing a speedo who was, shall we say, overinflated. I believe that photo, all by itself, started the current bias against speedos worldwide. I do believe that the much overworked moderator (Jim), tired of being subjected repeatedly to that image, released a potent virus onto the web to destroy all digital copies extant. If anyone can find a survivor copy, they should share it with our newer forumites to enrich this discussion.

Well, you bring up a good point; guilty as charged. It doesn't hurt me at all; you're right about that. Perhaps I was too harsh in saying some people "have no business wearing a Speedo", because you're right; if they are comfortable, that's what counts- for them. So, I will just put it this way now: I would choose not to wear revealing suits (or other clothing) if I felt too overweight and unfit to look good in them.

Wasn't meaning to single you out :) I couldn't remember who used that exact phrase. I just haven't ever understood why anyone would be upset at anyone else's choice of swimwear. Maybe I'm crazy, but I kind of think - more power to you if you have the self esteem to wear that suit! Better than hiding and being ashamed of your body, IMO.
I've definitely seen guys wearing Speedo-type suits on the beach that made me want to throw up, not because they were fat but because the suit was see-through or too tight or cut too small. :afraid:Do they have the right to wear them? Sure. Do I want to see that? No. But for lifeguards and competition, people need to wear what works for them, imo, and while uniforms are important, there needs to be some flexibility. If the standard lifeguard suit is a bikini, does that meant that the woman has to wear a bikini if she wants the job? Why? You can do the job perfectly well in a one-piece, and the employer should provide some options for people that would prefer, for whatever reason, to wear a less revealing suit. Same goes for the men.
From the original article link:
... "I wore a Speedo when I was in my twenties," he told the New York Daily News. "But come on! There should be a law prohibiting anyone over the age of 50 from wearing a Speedo."
The trunks, which leave so little to the imagination, have gained something akin to a cult status - by turns celebrated and derided as "banana hammocks", "lolly bags" and "budgie smugglers"....
I think that is pretty funny.
Yep... if you got the goods to pull it off (either gender), I say wear whatever is legal if you want... and I agree about the double standard issue. And I too have not been able to figure out how jammers are an improvement to Speedos in regards to being revealing.
I'm over 50 and I like my Speedo style suit, made of a "tan-through" style mesh fabric. They are very durable, and they dry fast. I sometimes get concerned looks, but I get compliments too sometimes.
"Board Shorts" are usually the uniform for male guards these days... but females are allowed the more bikini style, etc. That first image in the photo reference is an excellent example.
At my pool the female lifeguards always have to wear some sort of shorts (regulation color)... so no matter if it is bikini or a one-piece style suit... so it levels the field there a bit. Board Shorts are required for the guys, and everyone has to wear a uniform shirt.
But yeah, really!... who cares what they are wearing?... as long as they can do the job and save a life!
;)
If this guy doesn't think he's Speedo material, I believe him. (That's the kind of thing guys tend to be overly optimistic about, not to stereotype.) And, I am ALL for people having options they're comfortable with. Practically a religion for me.
But, I lost all sympathy for him when he blamed his age. There are plenty of 60+ masters swimmers who look better in a swimsuit than many of the teenage lifeguards.

Fair enough.
