Rich is one of those really great swimmers who doesn't do many masters meets but he is fast and seems to stay very fit. Rich won a gold medal at the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles, California. He swam in the prelims for the US 4×200 free relay, which won in the finals, with Bruce Hayes remarkable 2nd 100 vs Michael Gross.

He went 1:55.0 in the 200 LCM fr in 2006 at worlds.
